NATIVE GAME IN WESTLAND.
PROTEST AGAINST CLOSE SEASON,

Hokltika, May 17. At Wednesday's meeting, of the WestInad County Council, Councillor Clifton, lii condemning ■ the action of the Government in declaring the present a close season for nativo game, stated that the birds were so plentiful that the action of the Government was one which offered inducements to sportsmen to break the law. The chairman, Mr. Bruce, 6nid that while on a recent visit to South Westland, he had counted no fewer than seventeen birds ou one cabbage tree. At the Cook River and the Haasfc so plentiful were the pigeons that they were eating the turnip leaves. fc He had never known this class of game to be so plentiful. Councillor Murdock also spoke in opposition to the action of tlis Government, and said tihat his opinion was that for every pigeon shot, on© hundred were killed by stoats and weasels. The chairman then moved that representations bo made to the Minister for Internal Affairs asking that the season be opened for two months this year. The motion was carried
