SHANNON ITEMS.
The Rev. Mr. J. A. M'Kenzio presided at the opening debate of the Literary and Debating Society on Tuesday night in the Druids' Hall, when Mr. J. G. BaTclay moved: "That the Parliamentary franchise should be extended to the election of local bodies." Mr. Exall opposed the motion, and was supported by Mr. Bovis. Mr. Eastwood ably seconded Mr. Barclay. A number of speakers took part in the subsequent discussion, these including: Messrs. M'Kenzio. Gardiner, 'Trainer, Logan, Galland. Clayton, M'Millan, Hensman, and Selby. 'Tho motion, on being put, was defeated by 20 votes to 13. Mr. C. H. Gardiner was elected vice-president for the coming session, and, Mrs. Gibson was appointed to the committee. A number of new members were elected. Next Tuesday night the item on the syllabus will be "Readings from Favourite Authors."
