A conference of the Society of friends, which lias been silting in Cliristchnrch during the last few , days, closed to-night with an address given by Miss Margaret liiorp, of Liverpool, on the Young Friends' movement in Great Britain, et Woodbrook and Swanwich Settlements. It was shown that (here was a general and deep-rooted desire on the part of the younger portion of tho society to realise to tho fullest extent tho life "of spiritual power which so distinguished tho founders of tho society and their true followers in later history. Other speakers followed, showing how a wave of tho new life Has spreading to the Southern Hemisphere, and all wero urged to do their share in helping its advance. '
THE SADLER CASE, Christchurch, May 15. In the Sadler case, a charge of using an instrument unlawfully, tho jury was absent nearly three hours, and then returned a verdict of guilty. Sentence was deferred. THE DELAYED TREASURE HUNT. Dunedin, May 15. Tho deadlock in connection with the steamer Wairoa still continues. It is understood that negotiations were in progress to-day, and it is expected that' the vessel will be free to tail in a day or two. BRIEF MENTION. Gisborne, May 15. There is a serious epidemic of mumps in Gisborno. The outbreak is not confined to children, many grown-ups being also laid up. LAKE COLERIDGE POWER. Christchurch, May 15. Tho water supply is well forward, ami excavation for the reservoir is proceeding. SPORTS PROTECTION. Te Kuiti, May IS. A meeting held last night formed a branch of tho Sports Protection League. The organising secretary (Mr. Pnape) delivered an address on the aims and objects of the league. The Mayor presided. Considerable interest was shown, and » largo membership promised. Referring to the Auckland League, Mr. Paape said that if possible they would work together; they had no desire to conflict. A SAD EVENT. Feilding, Mav 15. i K. K.
