SIR JAMES CARROLL.

o PRESENTATION AT GISBOENE.' (By Telegraph.-Preaa Association.) Gisborne, May 15. Every available seat in His Majesty's Theatre was filled on tho occasion of the public presentation to Sir Jas. Carroll, to mark his long term aa member for. Gisborno in the New Zealand l'nrlinment. So great was the demand'for Mala, that hundreds had to be turned away. The Mayor stated that he was delighted to see present so many of the citizens, and so mauy of his country friends. In addition to this, telegrams had been received from all parts of the Dominion. A cablegram had been received from Sir Joseph Ward, expressing regret at being unable to be present. Sir James Carroll had represented tho district for a number of years, and not very long after the time ot his election he was called on to take up his duties as a Minister of the Crown. Those duties were carried out well. Sir Jas. Carroll was first of all Native Ministor, a position of difficulties and responsibilities, but he was felt to be the- man who could arrange the differences. He belieced that Sir James had done n vast amount, of good. Tho speaker hoped that now that Sir Jas. Carroll had retired from his Ministerial duties his political caretr was far from an end.

The Mayor then presented , Sir James Carroll with an illuminated address/ a handsome canteen, and a heavy gold cigar case, and for Lady Carroll a solid silver salvor.

Among the other speakers were Messrs. Lawry, ex-M.P. for Parnell, and Dillon, ex-M.P. for Hawke's Bay, and the Hon. W. D. S. Macdonald.

The Premier paid a high tribute to Sir James Carroll's public work in the im terests of the Dominion, and expressed gratification at being present. He referred to his great ability as a politician and statesman, so amply evidenced when Acting-Premier. Sir James Carroll, wfliq was received wit.heprolonged cheers, said he need not assure them that ho felt deeply the many kind things which had been said about Lady Carroll and himself. Ho recalled the'past twenty years, marked, arid well marked, with tho milestones of friendly relations between the races. He had been very fortunate in his political career to be identified wit'h some of the great movements inaugurated by the statesmen of tho Dominion. Ho could only trust tho Parliament of New Zealand would focus the forces sent out bv the great minds of these great men. He had every confidence in Mr. Mackenzie and his colleagues who were imbued with ambition to improve iinon things as the-y had found them. Ho (Sir James Carroll) had.always fousht beneath the Liberal flap, and any party forming under that banner must havo his support. In an analysis of tihe Houffi they found Liberals on both sides, but because of party feeling they wero found arrayed against each other. On concluding, Sir James Carroll was accorded a rare ovation.
