The captain of the steamer Californian deposed that he tried to converse by Jforso lamp signals. with an unknown steamer, apparently between him and the Titanic. Kβ was certain her white rockets were not distress signals. . She was six miles off. He did not believe she was the Titanic. Ho admitted that if the Marconi operator had been aroused when tho rockets were seen they would have picked up the Titanic messages.

Gibson, an apprentice, gavo evidence that Mr. Stone, tho second officer of the Californian, had looted through glasses nnd reported that he saw a vessel with a heavy list.

Lord Mersey (President of the Court) sharply examined Mr. Stone, who denied Gibson's statement. He said he only thought what he had seen were distress signals after he had heard of the disaster to the, Titanic.

AN ENDOWMENT FUND. London, May H. Mr. Bruce lamay, managing, director, jf the White Star Line, and his wifeare providing an endowment fund of ■£11,000 for pensions for persons disabled in the Titanic wreck, and also for widows of those drowned. The fund is intended as a memorial to the heroism of the crew pf the Titanic.
