Members of a deputation which waited upon the Prime Minister in regard to {firing road access to the scenic reserve gazetted were disappointed lit the .reception accorded. Tho Mayor explained the need for a road, as tho reserve is surrounded by private properties, but the Prime Minister snid that the policy of tho Department was not to giro access to reserves. Another member of the deputation wanted to knon* tho value of the reserve if people could not gain access to it. The Prime Minister: "You can take it from mo you won't get the road." Continuing, he said that if people were given access to the reserve they would destroy it.

Christchiirch, May 14. At the inquest touching the death of Helen-Goscomb; married, aged 38, who died in a lavatory on Sunday night, Br. Irving said that ho had found methylated spirits in the stomach and . the organs were in a degenerate condition. There was a mark of a blow on the chin. This might havo been sufficient to cause death. ' Frank GbscomV-deceased's husband, said that he had Keen drinking methylated spirits with his wife, because if was cheap. He quarrelled with her on Sunday, but did not strike her. Hβ found'her on Monday in the Juratory deiul. Detective Gibson said that ho found the body on the floor wedged firmly between the walls. Tho Magistrate (Mr. Bishop) said that tho Hale of methylated spirits should be stopped, becauso of tho prevalence of ifs use as drink. The inquest was adjourned till to-morrow.
UNSOBER MOTOR DRIVER. Walpawa, May H. At the adjourned inquest on tho bodies of Muri Muri and Hine Rene, who wore killed- in a motor accident on Tuesday last, a verdict was returned that tho deceased met their deaths through the driver, Kuku Matene Ropiha, attempting to negotiate a corner at an excessive speed while more or less under the influence of liquor.
