TIGHT MONEY-WHAT CAUSE? (From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmsrsfon North, May 14. Tightness of money came up for some mention at the quarterly meeting of tho l'alinerstoii Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Mr. M. A. Elliott, who presided, staled that this alleged state of the moneymarket, had bean partly attributed to the fact that there was a great discrepancy between the imports and exports of the Dominion. Ho thought, however, that tlii.-r discrepancy was more apparent than real. The "produce season hod been a lato one, and the exports were now riglftmg Ihcmselves. He also referred to the savings banks' business, which ho thought disclosed a more serious state of things. Judging by the greater sum of withdrawals over deposits, it appeared as if many people were living beyond their Captain Preeee informed the Chamber of Commerce yesterday that he had had Mr. G. Kelson's report on the Waikareinoann power scheme printed, and asked that it bo distributed among the other chambers, soliciting their support. Messrs. A. Seifert and J. M. Johnston considered that suction gas would give cheaper power than tho Governments water scheme. Tho president of the Chamber of Comnierce (Mr. M. A. Elliott) has been appointed to represent the chamber on the deputation which is being organised by the Wellington Chamber to wait on the Minister for Railways .with reference to improviii" the Mnnawatu service between Wellington and Valmerston. It was decided to leave the matter over till the Minister's reply had b«en received.
