Couiicil,.nt an early date, ..with the .view of urging more speedy 'measures-re-garding; the 'shortening:' of the Karbr'i tramway route.' It was understood that instructions had already been issued to the City Engineer to report upon the Hill Street, Sydney Street,-Ivelhurne, Aro Street, or any other route that might be possible. The Northland Association considered that any solution of the question to be of greatest service, must be a complete connection with tho existing system;, and in this connection it was sug: gested that an ideal street could bo constructed from the top. of Bowen Street, through, a small area of private property, uud-comingbut by tho cemetery gate in Sydney Street, and, making a junction with Tinakori ■ lioad at the corner of Andorson Park. It was claimed for this proposal that it would afford the shortest possible route by an almost-straight cut ifom Lam'bton Quay to Tinakori Koad, with an easy grade all the way. The association added that a conference with tho-'council on': this subject would be welcomed. Tho Mayor (Mr. Charles Cathie) moved that.a committee of the council, consisting pi Councillors Hildreth, Frost, Anderson, Burn,.and; tho mover:, boia-ppoint- ■ od to co-operate with tho Northland deputation in tho matter. Tho question would thus".bo kept prominently before'.the. City Council. There was -nothing liko pegging Councillor Standen moved, by way of amendment, that tho matter stand over for a fortnight, and that in the interim a report' in reply to a previous deputation to the City Council be obtained tor tho ! information of those about to confer with '■' the Northland ratepayers' deputies. Your Worship appears to bo taking rather a narrow of the matter," hf> said. I nin not opposed to your motion, but wo mi"ht aa well have tho opinion of tho City Council on tho points submitted by tho previous deputation. We are, unanimously agreed that wo want a shorter Tho Mayor replied that it would bo a stupid proceeding to ask the City Conncil to give au opinion upon a question,: thai: the ratepayers had 'already settled at the poll. They might as well po back tn the deputation which went t<l tho City, Council in Dr. Newman's Councillor Hildreth asked, as a question of principle, upon what authority the Mayor ruled out Councillor "Standen's amendment.- Hβ was not antagonistic to the Mayor's proposal, but there was a principle to bi> vindicated—had .not a councillor the right to move a motion? After a brief pause, during which the Mayor consulted the standing.orders, his Worship said that the amendment ■ contained irrelevant matter. Councillor Standen -stood- his- gronnd.[The amendment, he claimed, related to ' the question b&fore the council. It was not antagonistic to his Worship's-.moUon^-
it merely deferred further notion for a fortnight.-and-invitfd the counoil-to ohtain certain information .which might conceivably be of ihp'tn-.ths deputation before goini to the City Council. : After further' argument of a trifling 'chnracfar, the Mayor's "motion' was carried unanimously. ■•■■■■•'•■
