Lieutenant Brandon, the English officer who, with Captain French (also an English officer), was in December, 1910, sentenced io four years' imprisonment in a fortress on charges of espionage, secured a verdict of 80s. damages against a newspaper for accusing him of bribing a soldier to enable him to escape.
The Court mitigated tho fine because it held that a spy was unworthy of special protection by the law.
