EUGENICS EDUCATION SOCIETY.
THE FIRST YEAR'S WOBK. The first annual report of tho Wellington Eugenics Education Society reviews the activities of the society since its foundation a year ago, uml mentions tho papers read at monthly meetings, the public lectures delivered by Dr. j. Malcolm Mason and Professor H. 15. Kirk, and flic addresses given by Hμ president (Professor Kirk) and other members of tho council at tho invitation of certain local institutions. That eugenic ideals, when well founded, might lead to useful legislation, was indicated Ly the passing of the Mental Defectives Act, which enables the State, under sufficient safeguards, to retain custody of many defectives who would otherwise be liberated and would !>e at liberty to transmit their defects. Tho society had suffered from the fact that those in charge of its activities wore men and women whoso time was very fully occupied, but it was hoped that people of comparative leisure aim tho necessary qualifications for advancing the ■ eugenic , , causo would becomo interested in the work. Funds had not so far permitted tho dissemination of much literature, but the society hoped to be able-' soon to take up Hint branch of the work. Tho report concludes with nn acknowledgment of assistance received from tho press. "It almost seems as if the press were agreeably surprised to find that the society was not founded to advocate drastic legislation of an experimental kind. It is probable that, as long aa tho society recognises clearly that it is n Eugenics Education Society, it will rotnin popular support."
