• $-. Hearfy approval of the Defence Act comes from the Wanganui East Borough Council, and was emliodied in a resolution passed on Monday evening. The council also commended tho stand taken by the Hon. A. M. Myers, regarding the enforcement of the compulsory clauses of the Act. Tho Land and Income Tax Department gives notice that returns of income must be furnished not later than June 1.

In all probability there will not be a very large muster of junior cadets at the paiades to be hold in connection with the visit to Wellington of Lieutenaiit-Gcneral H. S. Baden-Powell on May 29 and 30 nex,t. It unfortunately happens that these dates fall within the May term holidays, and a number of the city teacherofh'cers will bo absent at the cadet officers' camp, to be held at Hastings during the term holiday week. The city junior cadet battalion commanders are at present in communication with the headmasters on tho subject.

The Hon. H. G. EH (Postmaster-Gen-eral) told a Dominion reporter yesterday that steps were being taken to establish a twopence-in-the-slot telephone apparatus for the residents of the Scatoim district. The machine would be placed in tho trnmwny shelter, tho Miramar Borough Council having already intimated that it was prepared to assist tho Department by allowing the machine to be installed there. This would be the first trial of the slot telephone in the suburbs, and if the public appreciated it similar machines would be erected in other parts of the suburbs of Wellington. Tho effect would bo that much, cheaper telephone communication would be available for those who had no telephones in their residences, anil lind to pay Gd. for any bureau communication. The slot telephone would, of course, not bo available for long-distance communications.

An Invercargill man was arrested in Wellington yesterday by Detective-Ser-geant M'Jlvoney ana Defective Bailey on a charge of having deserted his wife. He will bo brought before the Magistrate's Court this morning.

Tho first of tho library series of lectures will be given in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall this evening. The lecturer will bo Sir John Findlay, and his subject will bo "Kiig-emcs and the Control of tho Unfit." Such a lecture, delivered by so capable a speaker is expected to attract a large audience.

A meeting' to further tho candidature of Mr. W. 1 ,, . Thompson for the City Council was held yesterday afternoon at tho Chamber of Commerce. Reports from the representatives of the various committees were discussed, and final arrangements were wade for the election. The reports were highly satisfactory, and after a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman, Mr. Ballinger, the meeting terminated amid cheers for the candidate. Mr. Thompson publishes his views elsewhere. He claims flint his programme is a progressive ono in regard to all matters affecting the citizens' interest.

The Hon. J. A. Hanan. passed through Christchurch last night. Interviewed lie said that he was going into the whole question of education with a view to submitting a scries of recommendations to Parliament—Press Association.

The Postmaster-General (the Hon. H. G. Ell) has authorised the erection of 40 additional posting boxes in different parts of Auckland city.
