HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
+ The ordinary meeting of the Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by Councillors Hobbs, Ball, Roots, Stephenson, Clendon, Kemptliorne, Hodgins, and Knight. In tho absence of the Mayor Councillor Kempthorne took the chair. Mr. C. L. Strand undertook to remove certain fencing on White's Line, if called upon by the council'to do so. The Pctoiie Council' (in reply to a complaint, about gas) intimated that the case in question had been, unavoidable. It would not happen again. A circular was recuived from tho Polmcrston Chamber of Commerce inviting the co-operation of the council with other local bodies in regard to the Government's intention of enforcing the law relating to compulsory provisions of the Defence Act. On the motion of Councillor Hoots it was resolved to uphold the proposal. Messrs. Bullcr, Anderson, n,ud Bnddlo asked for the ruling of tho council in regard to an untenanted liouso not connected with the drainago scheme.— Resolved not to press for drainage connection while the house was unlet. Mr. Hayward intimated that he was ahout to erect buildings on the section adjoining the council's land on Main Street. He askedVif.'thp pouncil' would assist in tho building of tho survey lino between the _ sections.—Referred to the Works Committee. Councillor Roots was appointed to represent the council at the jubileo Services of Knox Church, Lower Hutt, on May 22. Mr. Harpor was authorised to represent the council at tho Assessment Court sittings, which are to be held iu Wellington shortly. Mr. Mantle, who has been absent from the Dominiou for some time, asked for a remit of 10 per cent, on certain overdue rates.—Deolined. Mr. Palmer asked that no action be taken in the matter of wandering stock on the Te Nonii estate.—Acceded to. Councillor Ball moved that a committee consisting of Councillors Hodgins, Clendon. Hobbs, and the mover be set up fa draft by-laws regulating the speed of motor-cars travelling through the borough. In support of his motiou, Councillor Ball stated that he wished it distinctly understood that he was not referring to local motor-car owners, but to peoplo who came out from Wellington. The motion was carried. Councillor Roots moved:—"That a remit bo sent for consideration at the. municipal conference to the effect that tho valuation rolls should be available by April I."—Carried. On the motion of Councillor Clendon it was decided to approach tho Department with regard to installing a telephone at the local Police Station. . The engineer reported that Section 4 of the eastern drainage had been comnleted, and a start had been made with Section 5. One connection had been made with tho gas main, and two with the water main, making a. "total to dato of 871.
