LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

4 THE BOYS' INSTITUTE. Sir,—The president's letter in your columns throws light upon the position of the building fund of the above institute, but to myself and probably many subscribers the position is not satisfactory. Some .£IO,OOO was originally talked .of, but few ever supposed that sa large a sum could be got or was really required. With a site provided, and between <£5000 and .£()000 in hand, a 'sufficient building could be found, and should have been erected. It is all very well to toll of its deposit at four per cent., but if when subscribers were called upon to pay up they had known that their gifts were to be so used and the building relegated to futuro years, and until the executive had .£7300 in hand, few would probably have paid up. Then the president hints at further delay until provision is made for maintenance and other obligations. It is difficult to realise what is being pointed to, but support cau only be got for a live institute, and this is certain, that if faith is not now kept with subscribers the executive will find that their further appeals will meet with dull response, and that in their excess oi' prudence they have crushed all hopes of this might-be valuable institution.—l am, etc., A SUBSCRIBER.
