PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of tho Petone Borough Council was held last night. There were present: Tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) and Councillors Piper, Brocklebank, Trueman, Burridge, Loader, Cox, Wakeham, List, and Short. It was decided to support the Eastern Harbour Association in their agitation to have the construction of the Waiwetu Bridge proceeded with at once. The letter covering resolutions passed by tho Palmorston Chamber of Commerce approving of the attitude taken by the Minister for Defence in enforcing the Defence Act was read. A motion to approve the resolutions wits rejected in favour of all amendment that they be received merely. The -reason for the vote was simply that the council ought not 1o concern 'itself with politics. Two of tho vacant foothiilt fields on tho eastern side of the stop-bank in the Recreation Reserve were granted to the Northern League at a. rental of .£5 per year. Tho engineer reported that improvements were beine made to the Akatea (Koro Koro) and Maungaraki wads, which appeared to have been neglected for some years. The waterworks were in good order, but attempts to discover the cause of the decreased pressure in the mains had proved ineffectual.—The resort was approved. Two tenders wero received for the construction of the western approach to fhe ITutt Pipe Bridge. The tender of John Maxwell was accepted. The Mayor moved:—That the town clerk be instructed to prepare a special roll excluding ratepayers from Maungaraki and Koro Koro for (lie purpose of Inking a poll on tho following proposals: —(1) To borrow ,£IO,OOO. for installing a sewernee system in the borough; (2) to raise .£2OOO for water works purposes; ami f.'i) to rai=e -EfiOO for a town clock and chimes for the municipal buildings.—Tho motion was carried.
