Alexander Ure, Lord Advocate for Scotland, said tho national insurance, scheme was not popular at present, but that was a peculiarity of all reforms. COMPULSORY INSURANCE. Sydney, May 13. The Hon. Mr. Flowers, Minister for Public Instruction, has declared that the Government is considering a scheme of State compulsory insurance,_ which to some extent will take away the independence of friendly societies. It will bo something similar to Mr. Lloyd-George .-3 English scheme. CHANGE CAUSED BY THE ACT. • (Rec. May 13, 10.15 p.m.) London, May 13. The Duke of Northumberland has resigned the presidency of the National Deposit Friendly Society because the Insurance Act has completely changed the position of such societies. He viewed the Government interference with jealousy and suspicion.
