Iltf has run repeateillv, but *> fur has not olnimofl the. attention of the judge. Loveil is certainly in the Mahie, but on bis worn a!- Trcntli'ain Insl month there is very little chance of his racing, f-o much alfoofed is ilis wiml. It. is to lw ho|>e<l Hint the withdrawal of Corazon from the Wangnnui Ktcepleeha.'o doe? not mean that anythsng is amiss with last year's winner. Jfccent re ; ports- from Hastings c,redit _the son of Cocur «e Lion with looking, very, troll, but 111 nylw his trainer does not consider him forward enough for Iho big evenl at AVanganui. "I-'ulures" are not attracting much interest. in ll',o city at the present' time, and probably Iho same condition of affairs will prevail until (lie appearance in print of.the Wangaiiui acceptances. These clojo on Friday evening. Weights for the first day's events at the Otaki Maori Uacing Club's meeting are due on May 23. , In Gisborne tho opinion is held that Continuance is likely to turn out a better horse over country than Te Arai. This is a large order,, but. the friends of tito horse mentioned state that lie" is jumping everything' given him in his schooling tasks with ease.. Moreover; his great pace will stand to him in any steeplechase. Bachelor's Hope; winner of the Kempton Park Great Jubilee Handicap, is in the same stable as Sweeper 11, who won tho Two Thousand Guineas'. The Trenthain owner-trainer;; W. Daries, will bo represented at, the- Wonganui meeting by Khamsin, who will contest the Counollv Handicap. Bis other representative, Xavier, broke down badly while racing in the second steeplechase at Trentham, and will have to undergo a lengthy spell. The breakdown was unfortunate as the Tasman gelding ivas : very. well, and was a safe conveyance over country. He would certainly have been able to win a steeplechase or two. ...... Dearest, one of the favourite selections for the Connolly Handicap at Wanganui, is also entered at the Oainaru meeting on the sonio day, and, .ai' She has also been nominated for the. Dunedin fixture during the following week, - it may be that her owner intends to giv.e her a flip to tho South Island. The chestnut gelding Waikaraka, -whose efforts' in the South have ,HO fair been confined to Hat racing, is nominated in liurdlo events at the forthcoming Duuedia mooting. C. Pritcharfl has Mount Victoria, Ceylon, Turna, and Blue Lake engaged at the Dunedin meeting next month. H. Hiekey has now fifteen horses in work at Hastings. Tho team comprises poveral junipers, and a recont addition to it is the Gisborne-owned Sublime. Ij. Wilson has been engaged to ride Cpromandel in tho Connolly; Handicap at AVanganui. It is reported that Appin Trill stall: in the Hack iStcoplechaso at Wanganui, and not in the open event, Master Soult was well- served with condition when ho went' More the auctioneer at tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile vards last week, but bidders were scarce. 'The hay horse was passed in when the bidding had reached 120 guineas, but he was subsequently sold to Mr., iloskius,- of Waiuku, at 130 guineas.—Auckland "Herald," A ' would-be purchaser' from Australia was after the Seaton Delaval gelding Jack Delaval (says tho Auckland "Star' ), but the answer, four figures, did not lead to any business. Saturday was probably the first occasion on which " the present Sovereign lias been present on a racecourse to see his own colours carried to victory. Dorando,. who won for his Majesty on Saturday, also won a race at the. Liverpool spring meeting, but his F.oyal owner could not lie present there on account of the coal strike. Carol Singer also carried tho Royal colours to victory at Leicester on April 4, when the King was not present. Mr. H. B. Mackenzie has disposed of the Salvadan gelding Black Northern to Mr. W. Montgomery, the price paid being 400 guineas. Black Northern -will fulfil his engagements at tho A.E.G. winter meeting, and will then, probably be " taken across to the other sloe. It is said that Monoplane, another of Mr. Mackenzie's horses, is under offer for sale, and that if no deal results the horse will be sent to Australia as Mr. Mackenzie has decided to giveup racing in New Zealand for the sentIt is plainly evident from the attracted by tho BircUwood Hunt this'season, and tlie geneinl trend of fconversation amongst those who favour jumping horses, that Southland is to be represented at the New Zealand Grand National meeting jn August (says the Southland "Times'). Quite a number of cross-country or Irnnt-ing-raca candidates are in active commission in the south, and it may be token for granted that many,of them will lie seen out at Kiccarton. ■ ' , The hurdle horse Bed Earl, who won races at the recent Timaru meeting, used to be known at hack meetings as Bush Rat. His sire, Black and Red, by Maxim —Aqulate. is well known,'but liis dam's breeding has hitherto been wrapped in obscurity. However, it now appears that he is from a mare by Earl ot Richmond (a horse from South Australia, imported to Southland by Mr. F. Wilson, of Orepuki) from an Australian-bred n-.are. It is claimed that the breeding of the latter is goad and can yet bo traced. A full sister to Eed Earl is owned in Orepuki at the present time, and two young horses by St. Patrick from the Earl of Richmond mare are growing up and are expected to prove useful. St. Patrick has sired a number of useful jumping horses in the Western District. , FIXTURES. May 23 aud 21—Wanganui J.C, Winter. May 23 and 24—North Otogo J.C. Winter. June 1 and 3—A.It.C. Winter.
