Moth sides seemed to hold even sway until (I. Struck, with a charaoleristie run, entered the eircle, and the first score came— I—o. College ciiiim quickly again with n lino forward rush, and, once inside the scoring area, Ueerc made a shot, which put College i goals in the lend. At tins period, United'* centre and right-halves were plnving weakly, and, from a liirther swoop into the circle, C. St rack shot a . clean goal. Hiilf-time was now called. Jhiring the interval United must have been putting their heads together, for thev jumped off the mark, and away they weiit*(Aiulrews anil Smythe catching, the eye most) in a warm passing bout, winch resulted in Boyd scoring United s iirsj. goal. From, the ensuing "bully united found their feet once again, and, alter tho College keeper had stopped a hoi one, Andrews whipped one in that gave him no chance. United 2-.'!., College now began to wake up a iittle, with the result that G. Strack sent in a clinking shot, which gave College a further lead. Mien United bored in again, mid Collins, their right-wing, made their tally three. Iron} now on tiiere was no further score, and at tho final the board read: College, i; United, 3. „ , „ Mr. J. Gondnll controlled the game. 1 WELLINGTON-GOVERNMENT LIFE. „ Thcso two teams met at Karori, and Wellington had no difficulty in putting i the Government men to flight. Ihp game was far from scientific, although tho ball travelled tip and down tho field fast and frequently. For the first ten minutes play was rather even, with no advantage to either. Then the Wellington forwards rallied, and from a fino centre from Keen (the right-wing), Armstrong found the net. Wellington were playing the stronger game, and presently Paul sent in a good shot. Wellington, 2-0. Government. Lite now infused some dash into their play, but their work was fruitless through nick of method. Wellington attacked again and, from a scramble on tho outskirts of the circle, Paul secured, and sent m his second shot, ami at half-time Wellington were leading by three to nil. On resuming after half-time .the gams became uninteresting, good passing rushes being "conspicuous by their absence. Evcntiiallv. however, Reed wound up a finrun by scoring Wellington's our h U-il Play then hovered round the centre for a time, and Williams (Governm"nt Life's centre-half) was kept busy defending until the ball was carried down to the full-backs, one of whom too is hl> hit over hi* own line, thus giving Wellington ■a Penalty "bully," which they turned to good account, for Beid,, stopping the ball f.-o„, a corner-hit, sent in a shot so warn, that Government Life merely stood and watched if rebound from the net. that made the scoi'e 5-0 in Wellington s favour, and from then on no further scoie . was registered. Mr. Cockrill was referee. METROPOLITAN-WESLEY. This game, played on Day's Bay XV 3 "round wa« won by Metropolitan, wno had evidently thought: that trading was "worth while," for their fine form enabled them to decisively beat W esley, who were palpably stale. Trail . ike outsc . Metropolitan attacked, and Muldoon scored from a melee in front ot the goal. Plav then oscillated, neither side claiming anv advantage, but Wesley's gonl-shoouiig was jini-iccablv poor. And. in fact, the same thing might bo said of botn teams. Wesley eventually rushed the ball down "■o the "oal, where Metropolitan conceded a corner, iron' which hit Klip sent in a good goal. Even plav ensued, Baker (Metropolitan) right full-back, repeatedly saving his side. He was very sure find = °Sooii after half-time. Clarke (Metropolitan) scored the second goal, and his efrort wa= smartlv followed by Muldoon, who poked one in, giving the Reds a lead of 3to 1. Then, for a few minutes, \\csley pressed hard, but the defence was equal to the strain, and as the result of obstruction, a penalty "bully" was ordered, which Keets failed to turn in account, but he onlv missed by inches. Piayshitted, and Blackburn scored Metropolitan s fourth goal. Shortly after the, same plaver sent in another, only to be followed by Muldoon. who made the score read: Metropolitan, o—l - ■ Mr. M. Luckie efficiently controlled the playOTHER PLAY. THE JtXIOIt GRADE MATCHES. Tho match St. Mark's v. Victoria College was plaved at Dunpa Street, nnd resulted in a win for St. Mark's by 3 goals to 2. College had ill-fortune/ with respect to several shots at goal during the second half, onlv missing the net by a few inches each time. In the first spell College carried plav into St. Mark's quarters, only ro be driven back bv good defence, but the College forwards kept the advantage for a time, and, bv good passing, enabled Foden to score. Play for some time was even, but then St, Mark's took charge, and, after some pretty passing, Reed found the net. Through, a mishit by,a College back, their goal was again in danger, but the fine defence of their goalkeeper saved the situation. Then, a.ter good plav, St. Mark's got into the circle, and Wilson added another goal. Just before half-time, Cleghorn, for College, took a nice pass for Hogg, and found tho net, thus equalising the scores. In the second spell St. Mark's rushed the play into ' College quarters., and Wilson, by fast fol- ' lowing up, scored his second goal. College were now playing with more combination, ■ and Cleghorn had two shots nt goal, one • striking tho side of the net, tho other ■ coins? just over the top liar. Irom this on College had much the best of tho gam*, ■ but their shooting was faulty.
