NATIONAL GALLERY.

OVER £3000 SUBSCRIBED. MOST POPULAR -PICTURE. Tho exhibition of British pictures was very largely attended on, Saturday, and it is estimated that close on 2000 people, visited tho gallery yesterday afternuuli. Tho continuous good attendance affords striking proof of the attractiveness of the paintings. It is also a vory gratifying feature from tho point of view of the workers for the National Gallop, becauso the fund is to receive a percentage of the admissions. Citizons are therefore rominded that by supporting tho exhibition, as it well deserves to be supported, they will not only derive much pleasant entertainment themselves, tut at the same time..will considerably.augment .the fund .. to be devoted to the purchase of national pictures ' Tho Picture Purchase, Fund has no\v covered three-fifths of 'the distance set by the City Council, and there is every prospect that another mile-post will be passed by tho end of tho'present week. As it will be impossible to make a personal appeal to every citizen, it is hoped that all who wish to help in a movement which will so largely benefit the people 'end the city will forward their contributions direct to tho secretary of the fund (.Mr. J. D. Gray, 75 Grant Road). Mr. George Pirie has purchased for • presentation to the National Gallery tho studv of children by Ruth Hollingworth, entitled "The -Sleepy-Model," a ■ picture which has been much favoured in the Tecent ballot. A very general wish is being expressed by tho friends of the late Mr. H. S. "Warden, ex-president of tho , New ~ Zealand Aeadomy of Fine Arts, and,'one of tho most enthusiastic and energetic workers in the cause of art in this district, to subscribe for the purchase of a memorial picture to be placed in tho National Gal-, lory. It is felt that this would bo a fitting and well-deserved tribute to one who took a keen interest-in-the National Gallery scheme, and worked hard to within'a few davs of his death to bring lfc.to; successful fruition. The first subscription for this ptirposo has already been Bent to the secretary of the National Gallery Fund, with a request that it to added to sums donated for tho purchase of a picture in memory of the lato Mr. .Wardell. H is stated that the council of the academy has this matter under consideration. . .. Tho voting for pictures in connection ■with the National Gallery purchases closed on Saturday evening. A keen interest was taken in tho ballot, and there wero; very few exhibits in tho gallery that did not'participate in tho-voting. The pic-ture-most favoured throughout was No. 2G, in gallery I,' "The Green Gown," but it was-finding a close competitor in "J-ho Mother," tho recently-arrived, work from the brush of Frank Dicksee, R.A., when the'-voting closed. The final count of the votes gives the following.results:—No. 2G, in gallery 1, "The Green Gown, 1002 votes; No. 132, in gallery 2, "The Tower Dridge," 1183 votes; No. 110, in gallery 2.
