THE CHRISTIANS OF PEKING
UNPRECEDENTED HONOURS. Unique honour w.is accorded the Christian community of Peking, China, when his Excellency Yuan-Shih-Kai' intimated, tiiat he would bo glad to 'meet four delegates at the Foreign Office on Friday, tho 23rd (says the "British Weekly" for March 14), and, accordingly, the Revs. Cheng Clung I, of the London Mission; Chen Hung Tβ, of tho Methodist Mission ; Li Yuan Ho, of the' American Congregational Mission; and Ku Tien Won, of tho American Presbyterian Mission; .were appointed;- The first-mentioned minister, who .-is on the Continuation Committee, of the Edinburgh Conference, was spokesman, for the deputation. He congratulated his Excellency "on the great service he had rendered in bringing order out of chaos, and the help he had given in bringing the war to a speedy termination/ aiul. assuring the newly-elected President that Christians were praying, for him. Yuan-Shih-Kai replied in e, delightful manner, assuring the. deputation tlmt religious liberty would bo fully assured, aud every effort ho 'made for the bringing in of a better day, etc. The Ki'v. Frederick Brown had 'been specially requested to attend to assist in tho interesting ceremony. Musical and military honours were .accorded tho deputation on the"same'scale as those' given to Ministers. Refreshments were served, and a delightful timo was spent in an informal way with tho ne.v President. Besides this, he has deputed his Excellency llu Woi Te, of the Foreign Office, to attend a mass meeting to be held by the Christians in celebration of the event. Such honours Tisive never before been granted the Christians of Peking.
