PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(From Oar Special Correspondent.) Palmorston North, May 10. The delegates who will attend tho Provincial Conference of the Farmers' Onion hero are to.be entertained by tho Palmerston branch at a banquet to bo held in the Municipal Hall on -May 28. Among those invited are: The Hon. the Minister for Agriculture, and Messrs. Clifton Keakes, and Kirk, and other heads of divisions of the Agricultural Department. A number of members of Parliament have Signified their intention of being present. jury summonses are now being issued for the sitting'-'of tho Supreme Court, to bo held hero at the end of tho month. The list of civil cases is a fairly heavy one, and, there are four criminal cases already on the calendar. A writ for XSOO damages for alleged libel has been issued against a wellknown resident uf Fohangina. Mrs. A. E. Whitehead has been elected president of the local branch of tho W.C.T.U., vice Mrs. H. Mowlem, who resigned owing to her departure from the district. . During his', visit ■to the Palmerston Hospital yesterday, Dr. Valintine made reference to the splendid work done by tho matron, Miss M'Lagan, and said, should a vacancy, occur, he would not have tho slightest hesitancy in recommendin" her appointment to one of the larger hospitals. Miss M'Lagan said she fully appreciated the high compliment, but had not the slightest, wish to leave the Palmerston institution. \ The Mayor interviewed the Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister for Internal Affairs, yesterday, on the matter of securing a piece of land at Terrace End for a recreation ground. Tho Minister asked that particulars of the area desired to be acquired should be sent him, and he would ©Oβ what could be done in the matter. There was a very large attendance at tho Salvation Army Hall lost evening, when a number of new brass instruments were presented to bandsmen. The Mayor presided and a number of members of the Borough Council were also present.
