Another notable French lady scientist has recently received official recognition. Mile. Edmeo Chandon, Bacholier es Xottres et es Sciences, after a brilliant career at the Sorbonne, has been appointed by Ministerial decree Assistant Astronomer to the.Paris Observatory. She is the first woman to be appointed to such a position in Franco. In England several women astronomers hold official posts fn the British Astronomical Association. Miss C. O. Stevens is director of the Observing Section for Meteors, Auroras, and Zodiacal Light. Another has made journeys to Russia, Lapland, and Trinidad to observe the total eclipses of the sun. As far back as 1828 Caroline Herschel was presented by the Royal Astronomical Society with its gold medal, avowedly for her lifelong help to her brother, but in roality for her own additions to the star maps, eo timid wero they in _ those days in recognising the original independent work of a woman. In our own tame the veteran Lady Huegins, who similarly helped her late illustrious husband, is the only woman hon. member of the Royal Astronomical Society. She is now devoting herself chiefly to the laboratory sido of astro-physics, with time and active sympathy to spare for social and political movements.
