According to the animal report of the council of the New Zealand Football Association, to be presented to the annual meeting of delegates on Friday, May -1, at the Y.M.C.A., the game conliiuies to make steady progress in New Zealand sport. There were last year eleven Associations affiliated to the New Zealand Football Association, comprising i'.S5 teams, as follow:—Auckland (a, Canterbury 8, Huwke's B:iv •!, Manawatu S, .Marlborough 7, Otngo SO, Poverty Bay (i, Southlanil 6, Taranaki 7, Wuug.i'.iui 4. Wellington SO, and about la unaffiliated teams. This is an increase of sixty tennis over tho previous season, and the council hopes that there will be a substantial increase- again this season. The number of boys playing the game throughout the Dominion was much increased, and the council should leave no stone unturned in its efforts to increase the number of lower grade and schools teams, affiliated to all associations. Special mention is made of (he fact (hat Auckland started a boys' competition, for llie first time, with about fifteen teams, while Wellington commencd a schools' competition, with leu teams. These arc only instances of the operations and good work of the year, but there is still room for considerable work amongst the lower grades, and a special committee to deal with this question throughout the whole of the Dominion is recommended.
The Hawke's Bav Association was reaffiliated during the year. The Wnikatn Clubs have become affiliated to the Auckland Association. Through the efforts of the Otago Football Association the game has been revived in Tim'ant and Oamarii. It mi»ht be advisable for your council to assist the good work of the Otago Association bv endeavouring to have sub-associa-tions formed in these districts, '.the one. great drawback in all of the smaller and outlviag places is really tho want of regular games, but possibly this difiicultv will bo overcome as the scope of the game is advanced. Tour council might pay a little more attention to this mat-
tor. , . Brown Shield matches were played as follow; in C-liristcliurch: —Onnterbury (t snolO, Otago fl goal); Canterbury a goal>), Manawntu tO goal); Canterbury (1 u'oal), "Wellington (I goal). F»r the {imp, neutral referees were supplied lor these sanies, and their expenses paid. Other representative malchcs in Mew Zealand ivfi'o plavei! its follow: 'larantikt u goals), Wanganui (1 Rial): Manawntu «~ goals), AVnnganiii (" goal); AVeUnigton (t goals). Manawatu (0 goal); Poverty Hay (t goals), Hawke's Bay (1 goal); Otago (4 goals), Southland (1 goal). Boys' matches:—Auckland ' (3 goals), Wellington ft goal); "Wellington (2 goal- • Auckland (1 roal); "Wellington (1 goal), Marlborough (rt goal). Yerv little further lias been done m the matter of Australasian representation on the council of tlic Football Association, nov indeed towards the visit of nil ti«U team to the colonies, bui correspondonce latterly on those matters has given a more hopeful view of the future, when it is confidently expected that some defmitu decision will be arrived at. Ijuaueo seems to be the stumbling-block in the way of an English tour, ami until this can be overcome there would seem to bo verv little hope of arranging such a tour. It 'lias been suggested that each of the ■■•even Australasian associations should contribute .C">o each for three years towards the cost of an English visit. It this could bo dune it would amount to ,£10;i0. which sum, at any rate, should more than cover any loss on such a tour; given fiuo weather, handsome profits should result. Mr. A. P. Gibbs lias lost no chance of looking after our interests, anil wc are fortunate in having such a capable enthusiast as our English representative. The question of inter-State matches has been taken up heartily by. Iho now)>formed Commonwealth Football Association, and, as a result thereof, the Queensland Pootball Association has arranged a lour through Now South Wales. This is, of course, one of the results of tlio conference. The matter of grounds is one which is of vital importance to Hie ganio throughout New Zealand, and tho. council is pleased to note that tho associations are realising this, and leaving no stono un ; turned to secure good playing areas. The Wellington Football _ Association has purchased a, ground at Kilbiruie, and the council wisely decided to take up twonty[ive shares in the, company formed for tho purpose of working tiie ground, thus sicuring an interest, in a ground formed for the purposes of .Association football. It is regretted that the Auckland Football Association has lost the use of Kdeu Park. Messrs. Pellit and Dudley have, owing to private reasons, withdrawn t.lieir ofF«;r of a trophy for a Xew Zealand cup competition. The Xew Zealand Ilcfcrees' Association is working steadily along, but thero is much work to be done yet. It must be recognised, however, that this body cannot be expected to have all matters iu connection with referees on a perfect footing after only t'.vo or three seasons' working. It is a matter for regret: that Mr. 11. X. Holmes had to tender his resignation 'is chairman, owing to his departure from Xew Zealand. Mr. Holmes lias done a tremendous amount or work for the same in "New Zealand, but he may again assist at some no distant date. Mr. C. Ward, Canterbury's delegate, lias found it necessary to resign during the present, season, owing tD pressure of work, but it is hoped his absence will be but ter.ipoi'ary. Tho way in which all associations, clubs, officials,'and players work harmoniously together is a matter for. much congratulation, and it is hoped that this unison will continue. Your secretary would suggest that the incoming council should formulate a definite policy, and outline, of work during future seasons, so that proposals regarding the future welfare of the "ame may be placed before the afiiiiated'assceialiolis. Thero is much workyet to be done in Xeiv Zealand regarding 'lie promotion of the game, and it can lost be done by working on definite lines. HOCKEY. TEAMS FOR SATURDAY.
