Tho weather was even better for today's races, and a big crowd turned out to view tho sport. The totalisator returns were much in excess of the figures for last year, wlien the weather was bad. Everything went off well, and there was an absence of anything in tho nature of "non-triers." The secretary, Mr. Turton, had matters well in hand, and the events wore run olf with punctuality. Tho Hurdle race again provided a "boil over," when the little-fancied Surplus, niter being prominent throughout, took charge at tho last fence, and won easily. Seaman and Dogger Bank both showed improved form, as compared with their displays yesterday, and Silver Cluse, who was badly oway again, showed up well, and finished fourth, just clear of Rawinia. The winner hails from the Auckland district, .iinl is a good sort of horse. Iln was ridden by W. J. Porter, in place of R. FerciVal, but he was not fancied by his owners, and paid a Tory long price. Despite his inglorious exhibition yestcrilav, Awahou again saw a short price, in' tho Borough Handicap, but he did no boiler, and finished last. East.wind and Draft were fighting out. tho fini-h a furlong from home, but Ngatirannui then came nu Iho soouo, and quickly sell led the position. Eastwind did not finish too well, but Master Tupuhi, who was a long way back at the turn, ran on well, ami should shortly get on tho winning list, as each race is improving hun. Muleteer and Strategist both performed verv disappointingly. When Lord Lupin was withdrawn from The Shorts, the remainder of tho field, with the exception of Pork Tide, were a poor lot. So it. came as no surprise to find the local marc backed down to a very short price. She did not find her feet smartlv, and was led by Princess Flo and Crawford to the straight entrance. Here tins favourite took charge, bill was immediately supplanted by Prosner. and the laCer cainc on, and won. Lady Fran, who got up on tho rails, and Swot Breeze, who came on the outside, were in the places, the favourite being fourth. Tin- liandicnpiier provided a splendid race in tho Jl'line Memorial Handicap. Slulga Bill was a betlor favourite than Slanewakaha and Coromamlel, and, with Dceley in the saddle, lie ran home ahead of I he field. At the start Red Lupin mode iho pace solidly, and. going out cf tho siraight, he was'followed by Avaunce and Koran, with M'ulga Hill at Hie fail of the field, and Coronetti'd a long way back. The favourite and Slendip moved up along the back, but (he funnel' got slopped, and .".gain fell back. At. the three furlonsr-, (.'oroiuaudel joined Red Lup ; n, mid led into the straight. Next came Slendip. and then Slulga Bill. Tho favourite finished very strongly, and won by a lengll), with the others bunched. The Xgamiitu Handicap provided a field of twelve runners, and a grand finish, At the start Gienfern rushed to the front, with Lady Vnlea. while Royal Simon got bumped, and Sliss Roberts dwelt badly. Down iho back Gloufcin and Lady Volga were still in command, but Royal Simon had run into third place. At the distance Ladv Volga was (lying signals of di-lross. and Royal Simon ran up to the leaders. A great struggle ensued, but Glcnfcrn held his own, and wen by a head. Lady Volga was a length away, and Aviatrix fourth. The Native was withdrawn from the Corinthian Handicap, leaving a quartet of runners. Comedian was a staunch favourite, and he led the whole woy, winning verv eaiik. Red Cora! kept hiin eompun'v lor six I'nrloiiss. ivhen the favourite 'went on ali.uc Millbank- finished half a I'urloni behind (he other runners. More money cos invested on the ma- '
chine, in Iho last. race than on any other" event, during the day, but four nnrses monojioliscd llir. betting, tialtce soon singled Ininisi'll' out, but, '"n the, uraight, Lady Volga came fn&t, and n'mA by :v lcngVli. A boikl race for second place, resulted in Hal tec beating Katua by a neck. Gordon Hell got u bad run, but finished well back.
