At the hearing at the Police Court of the charge against William Ward, who was arrested in West Australia in February last on a charge of murdering Ernest Nixey Smith at Chiswick in 1908, it was stated that Ward informed the constable who had charge of him on tho voyago Home that tho deceased had tried to arrest him, and was struck by an umbrella in the struggle. Learning that deceased had been stabbed, he went to Canada, and thence to Australia, where ho hid in the bush. Marshall, a tailor, testified that he bad heard Ward threaten to goiigo Smith's eye out. Another witness said he saw Ward following Smith, and strike tho latter .with an umbrella. Thero was no struggle. Ward was remanded.
