OPENING UP TARANAKI.

/RAILWAY COMMISSION SET UP. By a "Gazette" proclamation issued last 1 evening, the Governor appoints Messrs. E. \V. Holmes (Ens/iineer-in-Chief of tho Public AVorks Department), J. Burnett (Chief Engineer of tho New Zealand Government Railways), G. 11. Billiard (Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor of tho Department of Lands, New Pfvmouth), and 13. Clifton (Director of tho Fields and Experimental Farms Division of tho Department of Agriculture), a commission to inquire what railways or tramways are required to open up and servo the country lying to the westward of (ha main line of railway between Hawcra and New Plymouth. Mr. R. W. Holmes is to be chairman of the commission. The order of reference instructs In* commission as follows:— 1. To inquire into and report upon the host means to bo adopted to provide adequate means of communication for the transport of produce and other merchandise in tho area of country lying to the westward of the. main line of railway from Hnwera to New Plymouth, whether by railways or tramways, and having regard to the'opening-up and development of the said area, the probable traffic and tho necessities of tho country through which such railways or tramways will pass. 2. To inquire into nnd report upon the different route suggested for tho proposed branch line of railway from tho Wnnganui-New Plymouth railway to Opunakc. 3 To further inquire and report what, if anv, tramways would be advisable for tho opening up and development of the area of country hereinbefore referred to, and the best location for same. i. What will bo the probablo cost of the savl Tailways or tramways, and, what will probablv be ths economic am) commercial valuo and other merits of such railways or tramways respectively.
