MR. BUCKLEY'S RECITAL.
SECOND CONCEBT. Mr. Baxter Buckley's second pianoforte rroital was given at the Concert Chamber, Towi Hall, last evening, before a largo audience. 'I'lip programme of items, ' for a concert of this class, vas rnthe-r long, and had the- demands of a section of the audience for encore items boon conceded, would have overstrained tho interest of those to whom a suffioieiicy of pood things is an excellent feast. .M'r. Buckley's programme included Beethoven's "Sonata in A Flat," in the third movement of which occurs tho celebrated funeral march, Grieg's "Grand Concerto"- for the pianoforte, mid two brackets, the first including "Novelette" ami l'nppiilons" (Schumann}, and Chopin's "Andante Spiniato" and v "Polonaise" (by desire}; the second bracket consisted of Sinding's "Fruhlini;srawehen,"a "Barcarolle" p( Jl oszkowski \s, Yogrich's favourite "Staccato Caprice," and the well-known Scluibprt-Tausipr "Mnicho I Miiifaire." Quito a formidable, list, I which might have been cut down with advantage to tho quality of the pianist's work. , Broadly speakiiiig, the pianist's work was exec-Unit, but here and there a little unsteadiness in rhythm—particularly noticeable in the third movement of the Beethoven Sonata—and carelessness in fingering—as was noticed in the Marclw Miliitairo. v;lion, by the way, the pianist wos visibly tired. In the Chopin Polonaise, (he second and 'bird movement* of the Grir'S concerto, PiwKng's "Friilingsrnuchen," and Mos-Aowski's "Barcarolle." lite pianist was in his best form, and his playing wns ii treat to listen to, and he was heartily applauded by the audience, Assisting Mr. Buckley were Mr. F. R. Johnston* ('cellist). Mr. T. D. Collins (tenor), and Mrs. F. K. .Jolmstone (accompanist), Mr. Johnstono's items included Popper's "Adario," and a bracket —a "Melodic" (Chorpentier), and a Van Oocn's "Scherzo." 'i'ltc 'cellist, who was accompanied bv Mr?, .lolinstone, was .it hi? best, in the bracketed itom.*. Mr. Collins satiß his two ?o;i?s very shccca«fnlly. nitltoueh Puccini's "Che Golida Manilla" (from "T.n Bdlhmiio"). wns a n th; bcvonrl him. and the idyll "List Nieht (composed by Mr. Burklcy). was notnmta suited to his trniperameiit.
