NOTES AND COMMENTS. | |
[Bl QtINCOE.I Tho Egmont Racing Ciub'a meeting opens at Hawera to-morrow. A meeting of the stewards of the Jfastertou Racing Club was-held on Saturday, when the report of the Ground Committee was received refonjinciiding that a new stewards' stand be crccted 00 feet from the grandstand. The nc.v building will includo a jockcys' room aud secretary's office. | ' '
Au cxchango says-.—"Tho little Now Zealander, L. 11. Hewitt, was among the jockcys riding at Lincoln aud Liverpool, but though lie had several mounts, lie failed to score a win, three thirds being his record for throe days' riding. It is improbable Hewitt will remain in England, and no doubt we shall shortly hear of his return to Austria, where his services arc in such demand." Ben Jonson has been shaping in good style in his schooling efforts over tho big country at Ellerslie. Tlie New Zealand-bred Eifbolt started aii equal favourite with the quecrlyliamed Cooiahburragiindry in tho Liverpool mile at the Warwick I'arm meeting on April 27. The Birkenhead colt was unlucky, and was beaten into second place, the other favourite winning. • Tho operatic diva, Madame Xlolbn, was recently greatly taken with the Australian high jumper, Bluo Baron, and made an offer of 4:300 for him. This, however, was refused by tho owner. Tho enforced spell rendered necessary for St. Petersburg as the result of the fall which ho received at the last Wanganui meeting, may be the making of (lie half-brother to Danube, lie is now building up into a finn horse, and next season should strip a much improved animal. Antarctic is booked to leave Ellerslie for Wanganui on Sunday next. The Salviulan gelding is reported to be fast coming back to form. \V. Young has now ridden the winner of tho Hawkc's liny Cup three times. He was on Tangimoana in 111011, l-'ort William last year, and Los Angeles this year. Miscount looked well enough to tho c.vc wlien lie went out to contest the Hawkc's Bay Cup last week, but he made a poor showing, and seems to have lost all form. Like many another good horse before him, tho New Zealand Cup preparation the colt got last year seems to have got to the bottom of him. Tho hurdle gelding Moose is again in work at Wanganui after his throat operation, which seems to havo been successful, aud he will be given a race o\er fences very shortly. Odessa has been entered for the principal handicaps at tho Ellerslie meeting next month, and will be accompanied north by Naumai, wlio is to take part in tho sprint, events at the same meeting. English files just to hand state that his Majesty had intended to visit Aiutrco to see the Grand National, but had to abandon his trip on account of the coal strike. Mt. Victoria got hurt whilst being unshipped from tho Pateena on Friday last, and, in conscquencc, was unable to accompany the other members of C. Prifehard's team to Ashburton. Tho Achilies-Stepina colt, purchased at last Waikanae sale, lias been named Jason. Ho is a very taking youngster, and is one of the most forward of the Hastings contingent. At tho Fitzrov (Melbourne) pony raccs on April 29, two of the winners were from New Zealand, viz., Jliss Ambrose (St. Ambrose—Oritza) and Merry Time (Merrie England—Springtime). There is no doubt about the New Zea-land-bred Merry Monarch being a smart horss over hurdles (says the Melbourne "Argus"). He won again on Saturday, easily taking the Hurdle Race at C'aulfield. Larrakat, who was supposed to have the best chance of beating him, fell when leading about six furlongs from liome. Merry Monarch was lying handy at the time, and could apparently bave run past Larrnkai at any stage. "Lou" Robertson, the well-known trainer of trotters, lias Merry Monarch, and his condition reflects credit on him. It did not transpire why S. Howie, who rode Merry Monarch in his two previous winning races, gave placo on Saturday to H. Cairns. Howie rode Light Ballast, who made no shov.*. Jerry IL, the winner of the Liverpool Grand National, was a victim of tho coal strike. In order to reach Liverpool, for hi 3 race he had to cross London from Gore's stables at Findon, in Susssx. _ As in th« case of 3lr. Saunders Daviess hordes, a through railway journey was unobtainable, and Jerrv M„ after being =tftbied at night near Victoria was walked acro?= the Park in the early morning to Marylcbouc. to enter his box for Aintrw there.
