LABOUR AND LAW.

LABOUR AND LAW. A STUDY IN SPARRING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, May G. When tho Waterside Workers' dispute was mentioned in the Arbitration Court to-day, Mr. Grosvenor, for tho employers, asked that the award bo mode in terms of the findings of the Conciliation Council. Mr, Smith appeared for the Union Company and several other employers who objected to an award. Air. Way said that tho union objected to an award being f'orccd upon it as it h<id caniwlied its registration under the Act. There was some dispute about tho matter, and the facts were that at the date the representatives of the masters and men were called together by the Commissioner of the Conciliation Council in a minor dispute. This was two days after the time in which an objection could be taken to the cancellation of tho union's registration under tho Act. His Honor asked why the employers wanted an award when the union objected. Was it desirable under the circumstances? Mr, Grosvenor: We want some security. His Honour: Against what? Mr. Grosvenor: Against any attempt of the union to strike, or disregard tho socalled agreement that has been entered into. Mr. Way: With the big bulk of tho employers t'nero is already an agreement, and Mr. Grosvenor is dealing with only a small section. T!'is Honour suggested that, the employers should consider whether the appliealion for an award should not be withdrawn. They would simply bind tliem«e'ivec if the award were made, and in the event of a strike they would have to loinpiy with the conditions, while perilous ether emplovers were paying 'ess wages. Mr. Grosvenor asked for time to eonsuit the employers whom he represented. The f'onrr intimated that the ease would be called on again laier. . There is a case on the list in whieh the Waterside Workers' Union is alleged to have committed a breach of the Act when the recent strike took ninre. and it was acreed that this should be heard on Monday next.
