A SLUMP IN TIMBER.

HOKITIKA MILLS CLOSE DOWN. . A serious slump is being experienced in the sawmilling industry (writes a Hokitika correspondent), ami quite a largo number o£ mills in this district, ho adds, have been compelled to closo down, thereby throwing a number of men out of emplovinent. Home of the wills have been working -with half the -usual, start, but thev' have had perforce to further reduce the" number of hands employed. Various reasons are assigned for tho slump, but tho chief causa appears to be tho lack of orders for red pine timber. The mills which are fortunate enough to have white pine bush to work are doia; well, as plenty of orders are forthcoming, but tho local mills are not so favourably situated, and tho big shortening of hands must have an effect upon the business of the town. It is honed that a return to normal conditions will soon prevail, but at present the. outlook is not rosy.
