HOCKEY.

WEDNESDAY ASSOCIATION. Pakoha 3 Hui Mai 2 Petono 3 Hsreawa 2 Tho Wednesday Hockey Association opened its season yesterday afternoon, tiro games being played. The match Korori v. Artillery did not take place, I owing to tlie latter team not being ablo to muster a learn this week. This match will bo played at tho end of tho first round. The match Pakeha-Hui Mai was piayod at Karori, tho ground being in first-class condition and the play of both letms showed improvement on that exliiibited last season. The Pctonc-llereawa match was played at Petone, and Uio game was a hard one all through and in doubt until the whistle sounded time. PAKEHA-HUI MAI. From the ''bully-oil'," Pakeha carried play into Hui Mai's quarters, but a score was saved bv the fine defence of Star, Hui Mai's goal-keeper. From a froo-hit Hui Mai had a chance to score, winch, however, was lost by Bay getting oil-side. From n lino passing rush Ciracie sent tlio ball to Harrup, back to Grade, to Clapshiiw/wlio scored tho first goal for Pakoha. Play for some time thereafter was very even. Hui Man, netting the bull in (heir own quarters, carried it down the field, and Bay, by fast following up, notched a goal and evened matters. At bnlf-timo tho score stood one goal each. In tho second spoil, Pakeha had all the better of tho plar for a time, and,, from a forward rush. Gracie shot a goal. It was a splendid bit nf combined play, and tho shot—a left "back-hander "— was tho best bit o!' play of tho day. From this on Hui Mai maintained their attack, but tho fine defence of Pakeha kept them from scoring. Just before the call of time, M'Keever sustained a somewhat severe Wow from a rising ball, which had the effect of stopping play for a little time. The game finished in favour of I'.-ilifha by 3 goals to 2. Tho best players for the winners wcro Cranio, Smith, Clnpshaw, ond Jackson, while, for Hui Mai, Sherwood, Stevens, Star, and Bay iyere very prominent, Gracie was much the best player, and the opinion of competent spectators was that the selector for Wellington should s?o him play before finally selecting the reprcfccnUtivo team to go north. Mr. J. C, Cusiick was referee. PETOXE-HEREAWA. In the first spell of the Petonc-Heroawiv match, tho play for a time was very even, the. ball travelling from end to end. Tho first score was made just before half-time, Poinlon (Pctone) getting the ball in his own half, carried it into Hcreawa's circle, passing to W. M'Ewau, who scored. In the second spell, Heroawa, playing with more combination, kept play in front of Petoue's goal, and, from a forward rush, Kucli found the net. Fctone now put more life into their play, and the forwards, passing well, enabled M'Etran tc score his second goal. He was quickly followed by Bennett, who nddnd the tiliinl. llerca'wa now fought hard to equal the .-.core, and Caterer fjave Kuch a clinnco Io 'rore, which was accepted. The pimi!
