CIVIC AFFAIRS.

FORTNIGHTLY COUNCIL MEETING, The ordinary fortnightly mooting of the i City Council was held lust evening. There were present tho Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren), ' and Councillors A. 11. Hindmarsh, F. Cohen, G. Frost. J. Trevor, A. B. Atkinson, J. Godber, W. H. P. Barber, L. M'Kenzie, J. E. Fitzgerald, J. Fuller, G. Shirtciifi'e, K. Fletcher, and Dr. Cameron. FINANCE AND PROPERTY. On tt|e recommendation of the Finance and Property Committee, it was decided that tenders bo invited for the supply of a duplicating pumping plant for tlio Brooklyn Reservoir, and also for a pumping plant for the Northland Eesovvoir. The offer of Mr. Wigloy to contribute the sum of ,£250 towards the cost of excavating his .section of land at Evans Bay in connection with tho formation of fhu Kilbmim Recreation Ground was accepted. Nine ratepayers, who were without funds, were granted loans on the deferred payment system, in order to cany out j drainage works. j The report was adopted, CITY RESERVES. It was decided that the Superintendent of Reserves be instructed to utilise tho city reserves as depots for street sweepings and other suitable soil, ar.d that the Reserves Department pay half ths cost of cartage of the sweepings to Dappa Street Park.'

'Plus city engineer wns authorised to proceed with the construction of a new road at the Karori Cemetery, which will open up a burial ground at the western portion of the cemeterv, at an estimated cost of £270. The report was adopted. PUBLIC HEALTH. The Abattoirs aud Public Health Committee recommended: — That notices be authorised to be served •oil the owner and occupier of premises, Lambton Qiiny, requiring the carrying out of repairs to the premises, as recommended by the city engineer. That the owner of a factory in Martin Street be notified that, by melting tallow, he is oouMiiitting a breach of the Health ] Act, and that unless the work of render- i ing tallow is immediately discontinued, legal action will be taken. The report was approved. STREET LIGHTING. i Tho Street Lighting Committee rcoommended:— That street lamps bo erected as follows: I —Hoseneath Terrace, 1; Cocil Itoad, AVadcstown, 2; Clyde Street, Island Bay ■ 1; Adelaide Road South, I.—Adopted. OUTLYING DISTRICTS. The Outlying- Districts Committee recommended:— That (he.offer of tho South Wellington Land Company (o dedicate a strip of land 68ft. in width, between the end of tho new road to In. , formed at Iho junction of Ai'rifrii(. Street. Willi the Town Beit, Vogeltowii, provided the council cany tho road through the Town Kelt and form a wellgraded aijj-zasf from Wright Street to Liardot Street, bo accepted, subject to the conditions laid down by Ihu City Engineer. Tho committee reported:— That they propose to visit the properties in tho outlying districts, where the owners of same object to the laying of public drains through their sections, and that they will report with their recommendations to the next meeting of the council.

That they had received requests from property-owners of Island Hay that the drain it Island Bay be. culvorted this year, and that they had to recommend that the City Engineer be instructed to include a sum for tho work on this year's estimates. The report was adopted. ESTIMATES AND EXPENDITURE. A statement of estimates nnd expenditure for 1911-12, presented by the Fire Jirifiiide and Strcef Lighting Committee, showed that the estimated receipts in the fire brigade account were JSGO, nnd thnt the amount actually received was .£fil9. The estimated expenditure was .£Bl9*, and the amount nrtiiaily expended .£72l+. Ou the street lighting account the estimated expenditure was .£OOSO, and tho amount actually spent .£3710. The estimated expenditure, was .£7503, and tho sum actually spent .£79-12.
