MARTON FARMERS' UNION.

ANNUAL MEETING. The animal meeting of the Martnn branch of the Farmers' Union was held | on Saturday, Mr. 0. M. Marshall presiding, lu his address, the chairman remarked that the union must be ready to combine ngahifct any party directly opposed to the interests of those who worked the land. He thought lack of interest in union matter? was to be traced to the (act that farmers had no real cause for complaint. But the time would come when they would have to fight united interests, and then it would bo seen that farmers would be ready and willing to heli) by supporting their own union. The " subscriptions paid wore not much n?e unless active interest was nUo taken. Were they readily united expenses could be rcdiiCMl in. many. "Wo ought," added the chairman, "to have our own stock agency, and I would advocate the union appointing, its own agent for each district for 'negotiating paddock sales and also canvassing for members. Members' might be charged half per cent, less than others." Mr. K. W. Dalrymple moved: "That tho annual subscriptions be lovicd on the rateablo value of a member's property." This i he argued was the 'fairest method of fixin» subscriptions. The minimum scale he proposed to fix at 6s. for -810(10 valuation, and one shilling for each extra JHOOO Hi) to .£SOOO and then an additional two shillings for every JiiflOO above ,£SOOO —that is to pay, the subscription would be M for .£IO,OOO valuation of property.
