FORM AT HASTINGS. (By Telcffraph—Press Association.) Hastings, April 30. Stead's and Clifford's teams were cut before breakfast, and nil, with the exception of Masterpiece nnd IJeatherbrae, did slow work. . Alter breakfast tho work was mostly on the plough and tho outsido course proper, but nothing very interesting was witnessed. Kill and' Elfish did tho last seven, of eight furlongs in lniin. 32 4-ssee. Amaru, alone, went five furlongs ii lmin. Gsec. Byron and Montiform (on the plough) finished together at the end of 6ix furlongs run in lmin. 18seo. Theodore ran six furlongs in lmin. 18se<!. Manitau, aloue, wont seven furlongs in lmin. 33seo. Midnight Sun ran twice round at a good half pace. There was very little between Sublime and Birkline at the end of six furlongs, covered in lmin. lSJsec. , NOTES AND COMMENTS. (Bi Glincor.J The maidens engaged at Blenheim today arc a very moderate lot, and, if Arutintia (who has the reputation of being nblo to gallop) can be persuaded to leave tho mark, he may annex the opening event for the Porirua stable. Unfortunately, there is nothing certain about tho Achilles gelding getting away. So far he lias been seen imt in three races, and, each time, ho has been left many lengths. To-day ho will be ridden by B. Deeley. The Auckland horseman will also bo up on Dirge, Aloha, St. Felix, and Portland Lady. The last-named has been paid up for in two races, as has Dirge, but it is understood that tho l'orirua mnro will start in tho six furlongs event only, and Portland Lady in tho Electric Ilnndiuap only. S. Reid came back from the south yesterday morning, and, last evening, left for Blenheim, where he has been engaged to ride Gay Lawless in tho Electric Handicap to-day.' Mr. Grace's mare is very well at picsent, and, with a smart horseman like licid in the saddle, she should give a good account of herself. The Taranaki owner, A. Rhodes, intends giving To Walmroa a race ovor fences in the Hack Hurdles at Hawera and Wanganui, and his other horse, Zante, will also be seen out at Wanganui in tho steeplechase events. The pair will be ridden by L. Traill.

Thero will be seven runners in tho Marlborough Cup to-day. They arc:— Undecided, 9st. 131b., R. Hatch; Sea Queen, Bst. lilb., W. Price; Coromandel, Bst. 51 b., A. M'Mullan; Waipunui, 7st. 131b,, W. 11. M'Kay; Sinapis, 7st. 81b., 1.. Nodder; Odessa, 7«t. 71))., M. M'Donald; St. Felix, 7st. 51b., B. Oeeley. Tho first-named has nut done much werk since (lie TrenH'.am meeting, and, on this account, tho weight might seriously trouble him at the finish, but, on tho other hand, it is hard to get away from his Feilding Cup form. Sea Queen ran btullv at Troutham, and may bo going off. "albeit tho going at Trenthnm would not suit her. Coromandal raced on both days at Awapuni, but, since then, he has dona nothing on the tracks. It is a peculiarity of Trainer Jackson's that his horses are never worked much on the tracks, but are led at walking exercise a emit deal. Waipunui seems to have soured of tho racing game, and those who know him state that it is difficult for his trainer to get him to work oil the tracks. Sinpis will bo tho favourite, but the disii.nce may trnublo her. Odessa seems ti> liavo gon's) stale, as his recent efioris have been anything but impressive. Hit bottom-weight", St. Felix, i= reported to have freshened up a lot, and, as he has in the past shown a- marked partiality lor i the Kiverlamk course, and, furthermore, will be Deelev's mount, these two factors are likely to "weigh heavily with backers, and the St. Ambrose horse may divide favouritism with Sinapiß. ■ Sir George Cliiicrd, president of tho New Zealand Racing Conference, arrived from Christchurch yesterday, and went on to Ha=tin"S, where several of his horses will be racing to-day and to-morrow. According to the Melbourne "Sporting Ju'd"e " F. Burn has not ridden a winner fc- twelve months. Be ho owner, trainer, iockcv, or punter, everyono strikes an occasional run of "outs" in racing, and Burn who was onco almost invincible over the sticks, has evidently landed on his bad The' field for tho Kararau Hurdles at Hastings to-day includes two winners of tho Great Northern Hurdles, a winner of the Grand National Hurdles, and a winner of the Great Northern Steeples. It has now been definitely decided that Blakeney will accompany Boanerges to s'vdnev.aud G. Price camo down from \wapuiii yesterday to make arrangements for shipping the pair by Uie Ulimaroa on Friday week. . The llawkc's Bay Jockey Club's meeting lakes place to-day and to-morrow. Quite an interesting feature of the first day's racin" will be (he mooting of Masterpiece and Miscount in the Hawke's Bay Cup, as the l«"o horses named provided a stirring contest when they met in the C.J.C. Derby last November. It appears that Gunboat was weighted nt 9=t. sib. in the Glen Huntly Cup, ono mile nnd a furlong, run at Caulfield last Saturday. In tlie lastjssue of the Sydney "Referee." Gunboat was said to have been scratched, but this was apparently a mistake as the cables have since announced that the Calibre gelding ran second to Avenger, who hncl only 7st. lib. to carry, Amons tho candidates engaged in the Maiden Hack Rneo at Hastings this afternoon is Temerite, who was entered for feveral of tho big handicaps in Ee.ster week, but who did not sec the post in any of them. . \ recent winner in West Australia i= E<""hell. by Kileliernn from SeasheU fdam of Kiim and Sea Kim:). ' Trainer 1!. Barlow, of New Plymouth, is sending a f<l. Paul nony lo Sydney by the l'liinavoa next week.
