ACCIDENT TO S.S. CHELMSFORD. Auckland. April 29. The Northern Company s steamer Chelmsford met with an accident when off Hot Water Beach on Saturday night, breaking her propeller shaft at a point about midway between, tho engine and screw. She was towed into Whilianga yesterday morning by the tug Pelican, and temporary repairs are being effected so as to enable the Chelmsford to reach Auckland to-morrow morning, when the damage will be permanently repaired. THE SALVATION ARMY. Gisborne, April 29. Major Carmichael, tho Salvation Army Provincial Commissioner, received a cable message to-day from Melbourne, stating that Commissioner Richards, tho new Territorial Commissioner fur Now Zealand, would arrive in Wellington on June 19. His reception would take place on June 20 in Wellington. LICENSING ADVERTISEMENTS. Gisborne, April 29. At the annual mooting of the G.isborne Alliance to-night a resolution was passed requesting tho New Zealand Alliance at its forthcoming conference to protest against tho manner in which tho great majority of tho newspapers had inserted articles on tho liquor question as advertisements prior to tho election last year in a manner not merely conducive, but calculated seriously to mislead, tho reading public, and urging tho Alliance to bring tho matter under the notice of tho Newspaper Proprietors' Association. BIG DANNEVIRKE FIRE. Dannevirke, April 29. The Benconsfield Hotel (Davies, licensee), at Makotuku, was burned down early yesterday morning. Sugden's store, tho Public Library, a blacksmith's shop, and tho office of tho saleyards were also burned. Very little was saved from tho hotel, and nothing from the store. Asked if he would support the Prime Minister's proposal for an increase in the number of Ministers, Mr. Massey replied in tho negative. He thought there were sufficient to direct .the policy of different Departments. The real work was done by tho permanent heads. HEAVY SNOWFALL, Dunedin, April 29. Tho Clyde correspondent of tho Dunedin "Star" reports a ueavy fall of snow, in the back country for two days. Great loss of sheep is feared.

GALE WRECKS BUILDING. Christchurch, April 29. In tho gale yesterday morning a store in course of erection in Drydeir Street, Addington, for tho International Harvester Company, was wrecked. The beams for tho roof had just been, completed, and tho whole crushed down, splintering the heavy timber. Tho top sido brick wall was damaged, and (ho rear brick wall fell back on tho residence of Mr. John Coughlcy, headmaster of tho West Christchurch bchool, completely wrecking part of tho house. The occupants were away at church, and no one was injured. Mr. P. K. Shnw, builder of tho store, says tho building was thoroughly secured on Saturday. BALLOT FOR LAND.

LIME WORKS BURNED. Te Kuiti, April 29. A destructive firo occurred here on Saturday at 10 p.m., resulting in thoJ total loss of Wilson's limo and metal works. The origin of the firo is uncertain. It is supposed to have started in the generator house of a small engine. The outbreak was discovered by Mr. J. F. Welsh, the manager. The employees endeavoured to save tho building, but a high wind rendered their work ditiicult and dangerous. Much valuable machinery was destroyed or dam'agod, including two suction gas plants, ono of 100 and the other of 50 horse-power.

A largo extension and improvements had recently been mado to tlio works, which employ forty men. Tlio metalling contract on the Waikato roads was supplied from die works. Thcso will be held up. Numorous orders wore received for lime for farmers throughout the province, also lime for the gold fields, to bo used at. the cyanido batteries. Work was stopped at midday on Snturdav.
