Field, who has spent manv years in Papua, is visiting NewZealand at tho present time, and occupied the pulpit at the local Methodist Church on Sunday morning. Tho local Senior Cadets, No. 88 Company, aro to bo sworn in AVednosday evening next, and, from this timo on, will have a weekly parade night. Cuptnin Braddel, adjutant of tho Territorial Force in the Wairarapa district, will be present. The local officer in command is Lieutenant F. W. Eoydhouse. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa and East Coast V. and A. Society is to be held at Carterton on Saturday next. It is reported that Mr. R. N. Barton, formerly of Clifton Grove, has purchased the Bank View Estate, Te Whnrau, lateIv tho property of Mr. T. York. 'Mr. M'Ewnn, professional golf coach, of

Wanganui, has been engaged for. a fortnight by'the Wairarapa Golf Club. Several shooting parties left here on Monday for the lake to prepare for the opening of the season on Thursday neit. SHANNON. "Soccer" football has reached Shannon. Some enthusiasts from the Old Country wero out practising on the Recreation Ground-last week, and thero is now talk of forming a'properly-constitutcd Association club. The annual meeting of tho parishioners of tho Ven. Bede's Church was held last week, tho Rev. Air. C. Palmer presiding. The balance-sheet showed total receipts of i£l7l Bs. Sd., while tho expenditure amounted to .£175. IBs. Bd., leaving a debit balance of £-1 Bs. The statement of accounts was read by Mr. W. H. Gunning, vicar's churchwarden, and was adopted. The vicarage- fund account showed 'hat .£270 15s: 3d. bad been raised bv various means. The bank overdraft was JMfi Cs. 2d., and .£SOO remained on mortgage. Tho accounts of St. Aiden's, Tokomiiru, showed receipts totalliUg'-sCfil os. 3d., and expenditure .£62 9s. 2d., leaving a debit balance of .£1 Bs. lid. Tho vicar nominated Mr. W. H. Gunning as his warden, and Mr. Waring Taylor promised to act in that capacity during Mr. Gunning's absence in the Old Country. Mr. J. H. E. Tilling was elected parishioners' churchwarden, and the following vestrymen were appointed: Messrs. C. B. Robinson, B. B. Stephenson, H. B. Boultbce, H. Knowles, C. F. Exo.ll, 11. Mowbray, and 11. W. Tayloi. Mr. Exall was appointed niinute-secretnry to the vestry, and Mr. Martin was elected auditor. The vestry wished Mr. Gunning a pleasant trip to' the Old Country, and a

speedy return to Shannon. On the motion of the vicar, thanks were accorded the Sunday School teachers, collectors, tho choir, and the Ladies' Guild. He especially thanked Messrs. Batchelar and Gunnin» for their work in connection with the "Church, and wished the former success and happiness in his new homo. OTAKI. At a meeting of tho Horowhenua Rugby Union on Friday evening tho Waitohu Club was granted affiliation, . and the boundaries on tho north altered so as to provide for the inclusion of tho Foxton Club. It was decided to begin the championship matches on May 4. The annual meeting of the Horowhenua Hockey Association, held at Mannkau on Thursday night, proved the best attended since tho advent of hockey in this district, delegates being present from thirteen clubs. The balance-sheet showed a credit of ,C 6 155., while the report mentioned that, last vear, nine clubs.(four ladies and five men's) competed for the champion-

ship. The Ohau ladies won one championship, and Rahui the other. The Nordern Cup contest with Manawatu was lost by six goals to four, u creditable performance, considering that tho latter had proved champions in the New Zealand secondgrade contests. The election of officers resulted-.—President, Mr.. Byron Brown; vice-presidents, Mrs. Stevens, -Messrs. Glackin and Carter; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Davison; management committee, Messrs. L. Kilmister, A. Atkins, T Allen, H. Nicolson, H. Cockrell, nnd Bert Howell; delegates to N.Z.H.A., Mr. Murphy (Christchurch). The Tainui Ladies', Kimborley, Shannon, and Manakau Clubs wore received into the association. It was decided that tho championship matches should begin on May 8, and that the Glackin Cup be played for, to be won three tiroes in succession or fivo times at intervals. Complimentary reference was made to the services of the retiring secretary (Mr. P. Freeman). Tho election of a school committee at To Horo resulted as follows:—Messrs. H. Windley (chairman and secretory), P. K. Buchanan, ,T. Morgan, J. Best, D. Mickel, T. Taylor, and R. Hagan.
