JUSTIN M'CARTnY, By Telegraph-Profs Association-Copyright London, April 25. Tho death is announced of Mr. Justin M'Cartliy. Tho late Mr. Justin M'Carthy was born in Cork on November 22, 1830. About sixty years ago he left his native city for England. Ho was on tho staff of tho "Northern Daily Times," Liverpool, from 1552 to 18(i0. He was editor of the "Morning Star" when it was controlled by John Bright, and subsequently ho became chief leader-writer on tho "Daily News." Jlo was elected' a member of Parliament for Longford County in 1879; Derry Citv, lSSti-92; N. Longford, 1892-1900. He was appointed chairman of tho Irish Parliamentary party, which portion ho resigned in 189 G. Ho was a noted author, many of his novels, which were his earlier publications, attained a fair amount of popularity. "A History of Our Own Times" may bo regarded as his most important work, and recently ho was completing the sixth volume, bringing the history up to tho ond of tho late King's reign. His other works were: "A History of the Four Georges and William IV"; "Epoch of Reform"; "Life of Sir Robert Peel"; "Life of Pope Leo XIII"; '"Tlio Story of Sir. Gladstone's Lifu"; "Tho Reign of Queen Anno." As journalist, politician, and historian, lie has been one of tho most conspicuous figures ol' our time.

In October, 1910, a representative of the "Daily .News" visited Mr. M'Carthy in his homo at Folkestone, and found him full of memories of the past. "When I was editor of the 'Morning Star/" ho said, "I saw much of Bright; thoro was, i\obady liko him. In thoso days at the offico wo used nil to have tea together at fivo o'clock. Bright would often drop in there, and wo held a sort of i'reo Parliament. What a fund of humour lie had. Gladstone wns more to sarcasm. Both of them had voices of extraordinary effectiveness in public speaking. Gladstone's rose up to tho rafters and to every corner of tho gallery as a lark soars up into tho sky, but ho had not the deep, rich, mellow notes of Bright. "I left tho editorship of tho 'Morning Star' to travel in America, and on _ my return in 1871 I joined tho 'Daily News' as a leader writer. Tho paper had acquired a great reputation from the work Archibald Forbes did for it during tho Franco-Prussian War. Henry Labouchere had also written for it Ills 'Diary of the Siege of Paris.' The 'Daily News' and tho 'Morning Star' had l>een the only two. papers to sympathiso with tho North during tho American struggle. They both predicted with eonfidcuco tho ultimate victory of Lincoln and his party. The Times' surpassed itself in tho vehemence of its advocacy of tho South, and even a month before tho end of ( the war refused to believe that its proteges wcro beaten. Thackeray, John Stuart Mill, and George Meredith were among Mr. M'Carthy's friends. Sadly ho related how, just a week before Thackeray's ho received a note inviting him to a ' quiet dinner with tho novelist. "I accepted, but before tho day arrived Thackeray, liko Colonel Newcomc. 'stood in the prosenco of tho Master.' "
