NOTES ON THE RACING. (Bj Tclceraph.-Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, April 25. It was fine, overhead when the racing commenced to-day, but a cold wind blew all day, and the attendance fell off considerably as compared with yesterday. Tho success of Ermengarde in the Sires Produce Stakes was very popular, andthe fillv was received with cheers when Oliver brought her back to the birdcage. Tho only untoward event of-the day's sport was the start of the big handicap, in which Boanerges and Plantation were left at tho barrier and took no part in tho race. The crowd took this badly, and hooted for some time.
All the acceptors went to the post for the Hurdle liace, Silvn being selected as favourite. His backers were unfortunate, for he fell lit the second fenro from home, but his chance was then hopeless. Golden Water had a big break down the back, but Waterworks easily headed him nt. tho last fence, and won comfortably. Koran was a poor third, and Ambrosian, who again began very slowly, was fourth. Gold Bird, who was interfered with when Silva. fell, was the last to finish.. Matlow and Bonnie Boy were the best supported in an "even lot in the Welter, and the latter scored cleverly, after a h.-ird tussle with the favourite. Blakeney made tho running for a couple of furlongs, and then Negative forged ahead under pressure. Bonnio Boy and Matlow, however, were always well up, and entered the straight together. A good finish resulted in Bonnie Boy's favour by a neck. Turna and Knuroa finished very Vast, and occupied the next places. Form pointed to Lady Volga and Mount Victoria in the live , furlongs Hack Race, and they finished first and third respectively, being .separated by Miss Vera. Tho winner was quickest to begin, and was not headed, though he had a very small margin in his favour when tho post was reached. Amaru was slow to begin, and finished last. Septimus ran (|)iite n good nice, and was in (lie front division half-way down I ho straight, hut thereafter ho slopped badly, and fourth was the be?t ho could do. .Tho Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes was nnt Iho good race anticipated, for Ermengarde, Bon Ton, and Princo .Sonlt wore nn tho move, when the barrier went up, and tho first-named quickly got a useful break, while Prince Soult. who reared up, and Brown Owl. had all tho worst of matters. Tho Highden filly was not caught though, on being steadied across the bottom, the Auckland and Riccarton representatives ran to within a couple of lengths of her. When in the straight tho leader ran on very comfortably, while the exertion told on the other pair. Mallard mid Distinction were the elect of backers in tln> Hack Flying Handicap. This race proved (ho lioM of good things for Morrimac, who look charge soon after the start, and was not troubled again. Mallard had ovoi-.v cliancr, but rnn disippoiiitinelv, ami Distinction w;i* nine morn unlucky. Kina put in a rood run at
the turn, but' faded again, and Moutoa Girl beat him for second money. An unfortunate bungle nt the barrier robbed Boanerges ami PlantnUou of any chanco which they possessed in tho big handicap. When tho tapns wtro released Boanerges was standing side on, nnd in front of Plantation, and both failed U> move off with tho others. Mirn got nil the. best of it, nnd Mulga Bill the worst of it with respect to Uioso that did start. -I ho latter was sore, and took a long lime to improve his position, and at the halfinilo JJeelcy was driving.him hard, with Mini and Coromnndcl six lengths dear. At tho bottom of tho straight tho bind: gelding liuil joined the leaders, but, < hough Mira retired, Coromnndel showed no signs of faltering. After n liead-mid-hend tusslo to tho judge's box, Mulga Bill 311 st squeezed homo by the barest possible margin. Leonta end Morning had a great duel for favouritism in the Hack Welter ovent, and the support was justified. Both were beaten nt the iinish by Elfish, but only after a very hard race. It was the bost race of tho meeting, and, three furlongi from home the hold (with tho exception of OtahuJ-wan bunched up. M-mliau Ijoonta and Elfish were first into th<' straight, tho last-named being wide out. -Moahau eoon collapsed, nnd the other pair won. chalengod by Horning, n hard finish resulting as above. C. Price, who rodo tho winner, was considerably distressed after the race, which ho described "as 0110 of the hardest which ho. had ever taken part in.
Tho concluding event saw a big machine turnover, with tho whole of tho rutmers «cl] supporlod. Boanerges finished up favourite. There was a long dblav at tho barrier, caused by Waiouru and Boanerges refusing to join tho field. When the tapes were released, (he former got a big break, and Boanerges and Raugiatua were badly left. Waiouru stopped in tho straight, and Mon Ami, finishing strongly, won comfortably.
