COMMITTEE CRITICISED.

CHAIRMAN'S NAUTICAL IGNORANCE. (Rec. Apiil 25, 10.30 p.m.) Washington, April 25. Thcro are many comments on tho Senate Committee's haphazard methods, and Senator Smith's nautical ignorance. He asked one witness if the' Titanic sank by tho bows or by the head. Loud laughter greeted tho question. Apparently, in consequence cf these criticisms, Senator Smith stated that the committee intended to question all British subjects who were rescued from the Titanic, and who were in America. He added: "Wo shall hold thorn here until we have learned all. The committee will not tolerate any further attempts by anyone to shape its course." Senator Smith punctuated his remarks by pounding his fist on the table. Ho asked Mr. Lowo whence the icebergs came. Mr. Lowe: "From the Arctic regions." Senator Smith: "Of what are they composed"? Mr. Lowo: "Of ice." THE SENATE INQUIRY. WITHOUT PRECEDENT. London, April 24. Mr. F. D. Acland, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, in replying to several questions in tho Houso of Commons, said ho was not aware of the precedent under which the United States Senate was holding an inquiry into the Titanic disaster. Although Congress had the power to investigate and summon witnesses, if circumstances, arose and witnesses desired protection the Ambassador would be instructed to act, but lie trusted tho. good sense of tho Senate and the American people. WITNESSES DETAINED. j New York, April 24. I The Senate Committee has refused Mr, Ismay and Mr. Franklin (vice-president of the International Mercantile Marino Company) permission to return to England.-
