APATHETIC FARMERS.
LAXITY IN UNION MATTERS. Whilst organisation is the'goal ol the labourer ill all quarter.-., the thinners «» a body are showing' a remarkable apathy ill "their own union att'airs. Tlio meetings'of the-various branches of the Farmers'- Union which are.now being held in var.ious parts of the. eountry iiuliiritn plainly how little interest''farmers are taking'iu the.matter ot organisation. From more than- one source news has already come, to hand of branch meetings having to be'postponed on aecoiuit'.of a sufficient'.number of. members not having attended, and, taken all round, .there appears to be ample reason for the present crusade of the Dominion president of the union (Mr...). G." Wilson), who.has been addressing various meetings of farmers in the Wellington province of late, and en-, deavouring'to infuse' more.life into union matters. The reason that the man. on the. land has not taken more interest in union affairs is probably that a long run of good seasons has been his portion. If. absolute necessity does not force .the farmers to organise hurriedly, or some more attractive system' of organisation is not evolved, it would seem that there will he less and less interest evinced in _ union affairs. It would not be surprising to see, at no very distant date, some new scheme formulated with the object of banding- farmers together in their own interests.
