A deputation of land agents waited on the Prime Minister to-day, urging tho necessity for legislation for tho registration of land agents. The.v asked that Mr. Wittjr's Bill bo brought in as a Government measure. Tho l'rime Jiinister asked tho view of tho deputation as to nn agent selling land at .£SO oi> JMift an acre, and accepting a deposit of ;v few pounds only. Did tlioy not: think that by such ' Iransaclion's values were being unduly forced up? Tho deputation replied dial, this was outside the province of tho agent, and rested solely with tho vendor, who stated his terms.
Jlr. Mackenzie then asked if such a slate of a ifairsought not lo ho corrected. .It was considered by the deputation 'hat reform in this respect was perhaps desirable.
Tho Prime Jlinislcr said that not only did tho Government want Iho status of those dealing in land raised, but desired lo prol eel Ilia public from Iho artificial values which worn raised by I hew smaii deposils. lie could not promise to put anything on the Statute-book this year, but promised lo go into Jlr. Willy's'Bill and see if anything could be done in the dircelion indicated, lie quile approved of tho status of those engaged in the sale of land being fixed and guaranteed. Replying to a question by Jlr. Mackenzie, as lo what qualification a man hlid to carry in order to be registered, the deputation replied that it was proposed to leave tk&t to the local authority.
