CITY FISH MARKET.
PROSPECTS OF THE PROPOSAL. In compliance with a resolution passed by the City Council at its last meeting tho motion of Councillor Fletclior, chairman of the Markets Committee), the City Engineer is now preparing plans and ail estimate of (he cost of a building to serve as a fish depot. Speaking to a reporter yesterday, Councillor Fletcher remarked that municipal markets had been talked about for years, but hitherto the matter had ended in talk. He was confident now that something definite would bo done—and soon. The proposal is to erect a cheap structure on a. small section of reclaimed' land, adjoining the boat-shed of the Wellington iS'nvals, at tho southern end of Jervois Quay. Tho _ great thing, Councillor Fletcher considers, is to bring the produce and thb consumer into immediate touch, and he claims that tho establishment of evert a very modest depot will at once have tho effect of cheapening fish. He has been informod by Captain Eckford, owner of tho steamer-trawler Energy, that if the corporation establishes a depot, he will put another small steamer into commission to bring fish into Wellington. Mr. J. M. Samson, manager of the Chatham Islands Fishing Company, has also informed Councillor Fletcher that his company would send supplies of iisli to Wellington if a depot existed.
In addition to this, Councillor Fletcher pointed out that it would be open to any fishermen pursuing his calling in loca'l waters to make use of the depot to sell his catch.
