As tho result of an om-uinter, the constable was hadlv knocked about, and had to he taken to 'the hospital. Jle has not vet resumed his duties. The magistrate, said the case was one of Hie most brutal and cowardly that had ever come beliiro hitn. He regretted that the penalties ho could indict were so light, line <>l the accused had been in prison already lor seven davs, and, as he was drunk at the time, ho'was inclined to he- more lenient with him. lie sentenced him to 14 days imprisonment with hard labour. Iho other two were sentenced to tho maximum penalty of throe months imprisonment. At the Police Court this morning Thos. Henry Phillips, a mail of .b years, was charged that on March 8 ho assaulted Wm. Montgomery in tho Occidental Hotel, and caused him actual bodilv harm. A plea of "Not guilty was entered for the accused by Mr. \\. Hackctl. The accused was committed lor trial.

STEWARDESS MYSTERY. Auckland, April 22. The Fijian papers report that Miss Annie Miles, a stewardess on the steamer Antra, disappeared on the voyage between Taviuni and Lovuka. The occurrence is a complete mystery. SAVAGE HUSBAND. Auckland, April 22. J. Casey, who committed a brutal assault on his wife three weeks after their marriage, was to-day sentenced to two months' hard labour, the magistrate Ending that if a man could not k>cn his hands off his wife when intoxicated then lie should leavo liquor alone. GRUESOME DISCOVERIES. Auckland, April 22. The headless body of an infant, about twelve months old, was found on tho I>cmli at Hongitolo. It had been in the water for a considerable time. Gore, April 22. A man named John Crawford, for several years engaged in the cycle trado in Gore, was found this morning, near Otamita, with a bullet wound' in his head. He was removed to the hospital, whero he succumbed' an hour later. A repeating rifle was lying beside the body, and there was a 6inall box of bullets ill one of tho man's pockets.
A LICENSING CRUSADE. Palmerston North, April 22. Mr. Wm. Thomson commenced a crusado to-night in advocacy of the reform of the licensing legislation. He condemned tied houses,, and said tho Government should bring ih a Fair Rent Bill for hotels, tho rent to bo fixed by arbitration. They must abolish all goodwills, and even" 7iian must be allowed to buy his goods in the open market. Tho Government should subsidise all liquors, and allow none to bo sold without a Government brand as to its quality.
TIMARU HIGH SCHOOL. Timaru, April 22. Mr. AV. B. Howell to-day relinquished tlio chairmanship and membership of tlio High School Board, after being connected with it from its incorporation about ,■)!} years ago. Tlio board Ims appointed Mr. Montague Ohgley, of tlio Auckland City ITiprii School, third assistant and science- master. . .
