TRENTHAM RACES.
SECOND DAY.
BRONZE AdAIN VICTORIOUS. A RUN OF FAVOURITES. ST. LEGER WON BY COUNTERFEIT. Although the weather seemed unsettled on Saturday morning, it did not affect Hie atte-idmeo at the Wellington Racing Club's Autumn meeting at Trenthnni In fact, it is doubtful if (here has ever been a bigger crowd on (he course in the autumn, ami certainly the club has never held a moro successful meeting at this season of the year. Slight drizzling rain had been falling at Trentham on Friday, but when the racing commenced at midday on Saturday, the condition of the grounds and racing track was, if anything better than on tho first day. Showers, however, came on before the fourth race and continued at intervals throughout the aiternoon, making the going slightly heav.er each race. The spectators did not seem to l,e in the least inconvenienced by this, and on tho totalisator did not suffer. On the contrary, considering tho Email fields in some of the events, "leday s total investments must have exceeded all expectations. The spirited betting on the ht. Uger Stakes was quite a ieatjiro of tho meeting, the favourite combination (Counterfeit and Masterpiece) carrying- moro money than did Autumnus nnd Brown Owl f'n tho openin* clay. Altogether the sum of ,£i!2,3H7 was passed through the machine during the day, bringing tho total for the meeting up to .£42,023 10s. This, it will be seen, is considerably in excess of last vear's total of .£29,821. Tho Government tax, however, will press heavily on the club. , J-he racing was interesting enough, and m tjTO or three of tho events very close hnishes resulted. The principal event on the day s card—the Now Zealand St. Leger stakes—only attracted four runners, and was won from end to end by Counterfeit, whose stable companion, Masterpiece, filled second place, hi tho Autumn Handicap, Branze, who had won tho North Island Challenge Stakes lon the opening day, was sent out a strong favourite, and scored brilliantly. She again met with a warm reception on returning to scale. In contrast to the first day's racing, when only two favourites prevailed, no fewer than seren actual favourites wero first past the post 'on Saturday. Results of tho racing arc as follow:— SECOND HACK AND HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE, of 100 sovs. For hacks and qiinliiic-1 hunters. Two miles and a half. 1 Mr. H. J. Cameron's b. g. With the first day's winner, Beelino, not engaged, Glenmoro was made favourite in the Second Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase. On Wednesday, Dorando had finished in front of Qlenmoro, and for this the handicaps made a difference of 61b. in tho weights. This would probably not have stopped DoTando, but when making his run about seven furlongs from homo ho Btruclc a fence, cut hio stifle badly, and lost a lot of ground. Glenmore led from start to finish, and though ho looked to bo tiring a. mile from home he went on again and finished full of running. Zanto shaped well, and is likely to' improve with every race.
Sea Queen was withdrawn from . the Hutt Handicap in order that sho might contest tho big race. This left five nmners, and Sir Solo, who had finished fourth in the Thompson Handicap on Wednesday, nnd who now had Deeley in the saddle, was made a pronounced favourite. The Sir I.addo gelding won nicely nt the finish, but at tho homo turn tho whole five of the candidates appeared to have chances.
In the. Muritai Handicap, Tonoy was made a slightly better favourite than Manitou, nnd these two enndidates earned considerably moro than half the money on the machine. Toney duly won, but it appeared as if he was very fortunate to do so, for Lambton, who lost several lengths at the start, came with a fine run in the straight, and, although a couple of lengths away, finished much faster than tho winner. Manitou, whoso support was not justified by his track work or his appearance, came on tho scene in. the straight, but faded away again. Lndy Kilcheran, tho first day's winner, finished last.
Bonnerges and Sir Solo wero the only withdrawals from tho Autumn Handicap, for which Bronze was made a better favourite than Midnight Sun, while Undecided was also well backed. The favourite looked none.the worso for her hard racoon tho first day, but on recent Riccarton running it seemed a big task for her to defeat Midnight. Sun nt tho weights. Bain was just commencing to fall when the field lined up at the barrier, but tho going was still good. Soon after tho start, Oliver .hjul.jtho, favourite iu a nice position behind , the lenders.'* "She was going apparently well within her best effort until over half the distance had been covered, but then she lost her position, and her chance of success seemed to l>o a remote one. Tho Field Battery filly was, however, far from beaten, and when Oliver found an opening on the rails, sho da«hed through in tho straight, and won nicely. _ There can bo no doubt that Bronze is a thoroughly genuine stayer, and it is more thmi ever to bo regrette , ! that sho was not entered for any of the classics, for it is certain that tremendous interest would have been nrousod had sho and Counterfeit met nt Riccarton. Trenthanv, or Ellerslie. Flingot, who finished second to Bronze on Saturday, was- making his first appearance at the meeting. Ho looked well, and after being tailed off in tho early stages, finished strongly, and gained second ph\ce. Merrivonia ran better than sho has done for a long time. Midnight, Sun was' not apparently in a galloping mood, and occupied a rear position in the early stages, though ho ran up fifth at tho finish.
The Now Zealand St. Lcgor Stakes ended exactly as most people thought it would—Counterfeit first, and her stable companion, Masterpiece, second. Jones, acting no doubt on instructions, took Counterfeit to the front immediately, and set q strong pace. The result was that the raco was run in time that has only twice been beaten, but though she did win with something in hand, never won as easily as was expected, and not a few of her supporters experienced a thrill of excitement when Sir Knox ran to within a couple of lengths of her in the straight. On the colt's part, however, it was a dying effort. Ifore meritorious wore the finishing efforts of Byron and Masterpiece, who both ran tho winner close.
Bon Ton and Haskync were the favourite selections in the P««fic Handicap. The latter was hopelessly left at the start, and never improved. Eocene and Styx, made tho early running, and just when Eocene, had Styx beafeu, Bon Ton camo along, mid won bv a narrow margin. Oblignnt finished close up ftiird, but he had everything in his favour, and must be accounted not of the samo class as Haskyno and Bon Ton.
Makara, who was generally considered to have been unfortunate to loso the Railway Handicap' on Wednesday, was made a strong favourite in tho Suburban Handicap, Bootlo, Khnmsin, and Blue Lake being next in demand. The four candidates named had the race to themselves. Makara drew out at the homo turn, and Blue Lake then ran alongeido him. For half a. furlong it looked as if Bluo Lake was likely to win, but when Deeloy moved on the "favourite, he drew out again, and won convincingly. Bandicra was not at homo in the going, but tho races he has had at Trentham aro sure to improve him, as he is not yet thoroughly wound up.
In the concluding event backers pronounced for Distinction, but for onco during the. day they were wide of tho mark, as tho finish resolved itself into a battlo between Dirge and Gay Lawless, tho former winning by half n head.
Winning jockeys nt tbo meeting were: B. Deeley two, A. Oliver two, C. Emerson, two. A. Julian, R. Berry, L. Wilson.'W. Bell, K. Jones, E. Griffen, and C. Jenkins ono each.
