(By Teleerash.-Presß Association.)
Ashburton, April 20. An accident happened to the Mount Somers branch liiie train this morning, at a epofc near Ilackthorno Road, about twenty miles from Ashburton. Tho local railway officials aro very reticent, but it appears that for some cause not yet known tho eugino and ton wagone became derailed. The carriages did not leave tho rails, and, excepting that an axle of ono of tho trucks was broken, tho train euffered no damage. Later accounts show that the accident was caused by tho breaking of an axle on ono of the trucks while tho train was running at ordinary speed. This caused tho truck to "spread, and threw tho nine following wagons off the rails, and lore up tho lino for 100 yards. Tho enginedriver noticed tho trouble, and immediately applied the brakes and stopped tho train. The ongino and carriages remained i on tho lino.
There were about 60 passengers on the train, but the jolting was very light, and many did not notice the accident till the train, had stopped. Drags brought them to Ashburtou auout 1 o'clock, or 8t hours later.
A relief gang has been dlspatohed to the scene, ana repairs are now being effected.
