MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Onr Special Correspondentj.) ■■" Masterton, April 18. It is proposed to officially open tho assembly hall at the Masterton High School on May 2. Tho Hon. J. A. Hanan (Minister tor Education) is to he asked to perform the function. A children's plain air) fancy dress ball is to be held in the hall in the evening. The Church of England Men's Society has decided to again celebrate Empire Bay by holding; a sorvico for men in St. Matthew's Church on Whit Sunday. A parade of Territorials, fire brigades, etc., is to bo arranged for the occasion. Mr. H. W. H. Bligh, of tho WhiteCross League, intends givintr a series of addresses in Masterton on Sunday. Complaints aro made that on every occasion that a race meeting is held at Trentham the railway timc-tablo between Masterton and Wellington is "seriously interfered with. St. Matthew's Hockey Club held a smoke concert last evening to celebrate the opening of the season. Mr. C. R. Sykcs, M.P., left to-day on n visit to the outlying portions of the Masterton electorate. Ho will bo absent for somo clays. At tho conclusion of the fortnightly meeting of the Masterton branch of the Hibernian. Society, a social was tenderedto Bro. J. Waters, a past president of the. branch, who is leaving the district. Bro. Waters was presented with a Past Presi-. dent's emblem. A good deal of interest is being manifested in tho contest for tho local Mayoral chair. Mr. T. G. Hoar, who is. one of tho candidates, addressed a meeting of burgesses in the Town Hall this evening. Mr. A. Donaldson, a member of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society, who is leaving for Europo, was presented by the members of the society yesterday with a handsomo case of pipes. In St. Matthew's Church yesterday, Mr. James K. White was married to Miss Frances J. Birkett. Miss Catherine Lee aotod as bridesmnid, and Mr. William Mitchell as best man.
