THE TURF.
NOTES AND COMMENTS. SECOND DAY AT TRENTHAM, The Wellington Racing Club's Autumn meeting will be concluded at Trcntham this aftsrnoon, when tho principal events to be decided ore the Autumn Handicap, one milo and threo furlongs, and the Now Zealand St. Legor Stakes, for threo-yoar-olds, ono milo and three-quarters. In connection with the fixture, a special railway- service has been arranged, by which trains will leavo To Aro for tho racocourso at 10.28 a.m. and 10.13 a.m., and leavo Lambton station for the racocourso at 10.(5 a.m., 10.55 a.m., 11.5 a.m., and 1.5 p.m. "Mr. Highden" has practically decided on sending lioanerge3 to Australia to race, and it is probable that the Pilgrim's Progress horso will bo shipped to Sydney by the Ulimaroa on May 10. Since- winning tho Palmcrston North Stakes at Awapuni at Christmas time, tlio best performance registered by Boanerges was his second to Gipsy Bolle in the Thompson Handicap. He has previously shown himself to be a really good horse, howover, and, if he made tho same improvement as the majority of New Zealand horses that go to Australia, ho would be equal to winning plenty of races overthere. Bon Ton, who showed such a lot of pace in the Challenge Stakes on Wednesday, will be a runner in the Pacific Handicap to-day. Tho duel between him and Ifaskyne should bo full of interest. His Majesty the King had eavoral horses entered at the Newmarket Craven meeting this week, but if they fulfilled engagements thoy wero apparently not successful, otherwise the cables would suroly havo niado mention of them. Strategist, -who is now trained by H. King at Feilding, is likely to be raced in Sydney during the coming winter. The first of the English classics, tho Two Thousand Guineas, comes up for decision next Wednesday week. Weights for the Marlborough meeting aro duo on Monday next. One of the best gallops recorded nt Trentham yesterday was six furlongs by Theodore, who trotted up to tho mark, and, unassisted, ran- six furlongs in a tick better than lmin. lßsec. Sir Solo, with his shoes on, defeated Midnight Sun and a couple of others over a seven furlongs course, and Bootle and Haskyne also pleased greatly. Useful .work was done by a large number.of others. Tho Soult gelding Blakeney is a runner in tho Suburban Handicap at Trentham to-day, and will be riddeii by R. Berry, tho successful light-weight horseman from tho south. In the Railway Handicap on Wednesday, Gipsy Belie was handicapped at Bst. 111b., and Bandiera at Bst. 81b. Gipsy Belle did not start in that event, but she won tho Thompson Handicap. In. tho Suburban Handicap to-day she will meet Bandiera on lib. better terms than she would havo met him in the Railway Handicap. It was reported in the city yesterday that both Counterfeit and Masterpiece would run in the St. Leger to-day. If this is so, there is likely to - bo four runners, as both Byron and Sir Knox aro to be saddled up, and will be ridden by Oliver and Jenkins respectively. A. Oliver, who won the North Island Challenge Stakes on Bronze on Wednesday, had not previously ridden the winner of that event. Sir Solo and Sea Queen have been paid up for in both the Autumn . and Hutt Handicaps to-day. The former will Btart in the Welter, and will bo ridden by Deeley, while Sea Queen will run in tho big handicap, and will have her usual pilot, W. Price, in the saddle Boanerges is in favour in some quarters for the Longburn Handicap at Awapuni, in which he will be ridden by C. Jenkins. Tho ChokcbAra—double,,,Masterpiece. and Hcatherbrae, has been supported at a short prico for tho Longburn and Telegraph Handicap double. Though' thero are several fresh horses engaged, including Gay Lawless, tho Wairarapa horse Distinction is likely to be a firm favourite for the concluding event at Trentham tc-day. Tho Daunt gelding is coming on with every race, and, outside Mount Victoria, he gave tho rest of tho field a bad beating on Wednesday. Mr. Bidwill thinks highly of Distinction, and, on Thursday, refused to put a prico ou him. ' It will depend upon tho weather to-day whether G. Prico will start Bronze or Boanerges in tho Autumn Handicap. If the rain comes on, and renders the going soft, Boanerges 15111 take his place at the barrier, but, -if tho weather holds off, Bronzo will be the stable representative. In the event of the pair being starters, Oliver will ride Bronze, and Jenkins Boanerges. A cablegram received in Wellington yesterday records tho death at Prahan, Melbourne, of Mr. L. Rose Jacgar, formerly a well-known business man in Wellington, and who raced several horses here under tho nom de course of Mr. Ifiddleton Melrose. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT.
