At 6.15 p.m. yestorday the Huddart-Par-kor steamer Mimaroa arrived at Wellington from Sydney direct, and berthed at the Queen .s Wharf No. 1 sonth. Tho vessel left, Sydney at 6.30 p.m. last Saturday, and experienced a heavy head swell the flr»t day out. On Tuesday a heavy R.W. Rale and sea were encountered. In continuation of her journey to southern ports, Dobart, and Melbourne, the XJlimaroa leaves port at 5 p.m. to-day. Captain Lidstone, late of tho steamer Aerehano, has been appointed to take charge of the new Tyser liner Makarlnl, which leaves London shortly for Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports. On May A t tho Tyser liner Muritai, which a.rrived at London from New Zealand, on April 10, is expected to leave on the return trip to Melbourne, Sydney, and 2\ew Zealand ports. A biff shipment of Newcastle coal is cominp: to New Zealand by the Wairuna. The vessel left Newcastle last Friday, and lg duo at Lyttelton to-day. Mr. W. IT. Barton, of the Union Company's Wesiport ofiice, has joined the Maori a.s assistant purser, in place of Mr. Wood, who has transferred to the Monowai. A sailor who deserted from the barque Sirius when she was recently in Weslport appeared in public after the vessel had sailed, as deserters usually do. Jlo discloses (says the Westport "Times") that he spent three or four day? in the scrub at the south f-'idc of the river, opposite the wharf, where he had a good view of tho ship. Jiis sustenance was a loaf of bread and a small quantity of other food supplied to him by a boy whose acquaintance he had made. It was expected that the Union Company's steamer Haupiri would leave (Jisborne for Napier and Wollinpton this morninpr. The Ilaupiri is due in port on Saturday, and sails the same day for Picton, East Coast hays and ports, and Auckland. The Koromiko, which is at. present loadinp timber at Kaipara, will leave in a day or two for Melbourne and Sydney. It is expected that the collier Kotulcu will complete her overhaul at Port Chalmers to-day. The Breeze will occupy the dock next. Tho New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamer arrived at Wellington from Waitara test evening. Homeward loading will be continued here, and departure taken for Napier to-morrow. Last evening the F.-IT.-S. steamer Su.sfcsx .cleared Wellington for TiiuaHi and Lyttelton. Oit April 24 she leaves the latter port for Avonmouth, via Las Palmas. Tho vessel loads, at (ireymouth for the Bluff. | CHRONOMETER RATING NOTICE. 1 Ilector Observatory, Wellington.-The position of the Hector Observatory, is as follows:— Latitude, 41deg. 17niin. 3.7650 c. South. Longitude, 11 hours 39min. 4.275ec. East of Greenwich. Height, above 1903 mean eea level, 418 feet. Chronometer Rating Notice—At 1 p.m. to-day a galvanometer signal for rating chronometers will be sent from the Observatory to the Public Telegraph Oflieo and to the Dominion Museum. The needle will move at 1 p.m. exactly of New Zealand Ktandard mean, time, when a chronometer set to Greenwich mean timo should show 15 hours 30min. Any difference will bq the error of the chronometer on Greenwich mean time. At 9 p.m. correct, time will also be signalled from the Observatory by means of electric lights. A green light will be switched on at about 8.45 p.m., a red one at about 8.55 p.m., and a white oiic at about 8.59 p.m., and all lights will bo switched oil' at 9 p.m. exactly of New Zealand standard mean time. The preparatory switching on of the lights must be considered as, only approximately corrcct, and must not bo used for rating chronometers.
