NATIVE GAME.
TO PREVENT EXCESSIVE SLAUGHTER. "Wo are opening the game to tho man who is a sport, and wo arc shutting down on tho man who is a pot-boiler," said tho Minister for Internal Affairs (Hon. G. W. Russell) to a Dominion - reporter yesterday. Tho Minister decided that-the number of paradiso ducks that may bo shot by ono license-holder in any ono day shall be limited to twelve. This decision has been oomo to on account'of tho slaughter that was indulged in by holders of licenses during tho open season of 1901). Tho paradiso duck season will commence on May 1, and last for fourteen days only, and instructions havo been given by tho Department to sec that tho maximum number that may bo shot is not exceeded. As already announced, in regard to other native game, tho number that may bo shot per diem by any ono license-holder is limited to twenty-five. ' Tho approaching shooting season will bo a close one for native pigeons. Representations have been made of wholesale slaughter of tho birds in certain districts, almost amounting to extermination, and it was considered that tho proclamation of a close! season was an absolute necessity.
