— 1 PUBLICAN'S SUNDAY FRIENDS. (Dj Telegraph.— Press Association.) Pahlatua, April 17. At the Police Court to-day four men pleaded guilty to being found on tho premises of the Post Office Hotel, Pahiatua, on March 17 (a Sunday), and woro fined ss. each and costs. Michael Fitzgerald, the licensee, was ■charged with exposing liquor for sale on the same occasion. Defendant said that tho four men in question came to Ins hotel about 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 1", and asked for drinks. Ho replied that he could not servo them, but offered to "shout" and invited them to the bar, closing the door behind him. Ho opened tho door when tho police knocked. 'Micro was no suggestion of any money beingpaid for the drinks, and he had no intention whatever of breaking tho law. Mr. N. R. Russell, counsel for defendant, said that there was an idea prevalent amongst publicans that they could entertain their friends on Sunday. Connsol quoted a ruling by Supremo Court Judges in a somewhat similar case, whero the decision had been given .in favour or the licensee. The magistrate (Mr. L. G, licid, S.M.), reserved decisiou.
