TRADE WITH CANADA.
NEW ZEALAND DUTTBH. Auckland, April 16. "I have received information by last mail to the effect ;h:it New Zealand Imtter had been pclliii" duriiiß tho month of February tuid the early part of March at Is. 7d. per pound in Ottawa, whereas the price of Canadian creamery butler during l.lic same period was Is. Bd. per pound." This remark was made by Mr. Beddoe, Canadian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, this morning when waited on for information concemhiK the prospects of hew Zealand's trade wnh Canada. To reach Ottawa butter from this Dominion has to travel about II.ODO miles by boat to Vancouver, and then 3500 miles by rail. Further, it is Biisccptiblo to cool storageoharKes, therefore, the fact that our butter is capable of heinj; sold at a lower rate than the local product la somewhat remarkable. "What of tho quality? Mr. Beddoe was asked. "Well" he replied, the comparison appears to be in favour of the New Zealand article, as my correspondent remarks, 'the butter is beautiful, and we prefer it to our own creamery butter. , " A further fact of intorest mentioned by Mr Beddoe was that potatoes havo been Belling lately in Ottawa for Us. 4d. per bag on a rising market. The doinand had been so great that Importations bad been made from Ireland. "It is intimated to me, said the commissioner, "that many thoußnnds of bags could havo been sold at a good price had they been available. The position is certainly a remarkable one that Canada, whioh Is such a heavy producer of dairy and agricultural produce, should find It necessary to buy bufc'.cr from New Zealand and potatoes from Ireland." , Mr. Beddoe said that he was aware that large Quantities of onions are shipped to Vancouver from here at this time of the year. '■ Asked α-s to the condition of trade generally between Canada, and New Zealand, Mr. Beddoe said that Canada finds no fault with the expansion of trade in eo far as It offects Canadian eworta to New land. The returns of the Montreal Canadian subsidised sen-ice for the fiscal year ended March 30. 1910, ho said, showed, an increase of £20,000 over tho previous year, and last year's increase was £80,000 oyer and above the twelve months preceding from the Vancouver Bide. The vessels on the new Canadian-New Zealand service had large cargoes from Canada for this Dominion. "A review of the situation," remarked the commissioner, "discloses the advontastes of n, preferential tariff within the Empire. Previous to reciprocal preferential relations with Canada, the mutual trade of the two countries wai much less than at present." The iniDoriance of adequate tr.insnortation facilities wag also emnhaslscd. In reply to further questions, Mr. Beddoo said that the boats which came from Montreal to New Zealand subsidised by the Canadian Government did not return to Canada. This Dominion was thus losing an opportunity of securing valuable additional facilities for export. Some of 'he boats went to London loaded with New Zealand produce, while others of them went to Australia and loaded produce for tho Homo market. "Tho significant feature herein. ?a,id Jtr. Beddoe, "is that Canada pays £2000 every month for a vessel equipped with refrigerated apace (which is not needed for her own exports) to enrrr her manufactured products to New Zealand from Kastern Canada, and this action is made nugatory from the New 7/caland standpoint because this Dominion dons not take advantage, of ther/> boa's. Canada, by naying the_ subsidy alone," added Mr. Beddoe, "provided tho character of vessel that you need in your return business, but which wo dont actually need in tho sbipplnc of our inanu- [ lectured a-Kiclcs to New Zealand.'
